What's the end game for slow swimmers

MoCo has high school swimming, which has been great fun and school spirit for my slow swimmer. If not for that, probably would have quit.

The big thing is that it makes him a safe swimmer. An important life skill. Yes - absolutely- have him take a life saving class in a few years. That’s important, but knowing that he can swim well is key.

Might consider water polo too.

Can you slow swimmer make the team? My kid will go to high school in Arlington and I always assumed he would make the team.

Sorry I always assumed he would NOT make the team

He can become a triathlete as an adult.

I was a “slow” swimmer but I loved my summer team and the winter practices kept me in shape.

As an adult master swimmer I was being self-deprecating and the coach said something to the effect of, “you may not see yourself as fast but you are a better swimmer than 99% of adults.” That really resonated with me - I wasn’t good by NVSL/PVSL standards but being as good as I am is still a privilege and a gift.

Fun. Exercise. My kid is one of the slowest. No big deal.

Never has been. No swim. No dive. No gymnastics. No crew.

The endgame: it’s fun, it’s exercise, it’s an important life skill. So he’s not Michael Phelps…who cares?

Yes! Just need to be able to swim a 100 free, and 50 in other strokes. Speed doesn’t matter.

Our MCPS swim team has cuts—and just varsity, so no JV slots. It is definitely competitive.

Ours was no-cut

I was a good swimmer but never going to make the national team. I ended up doing synchronized swimming, then masters and open water swimming.

Is your son interested in water polo or distance swimming? He would also have a good skill base for training for triathlons. I saw lots of good runners who weren't good swimmers, and the swimming ability is hard to pick up an a later age. A friend from my swim club became the triathlon world champ.

Being able to swim will set him up if he wants to do rowing or sailing.

Even if he doesn't pursue other water disciplines, be happy that he will be water-safe and have a sport he can do for the rest of his life. Going into high school, he also has the chance to try new land-based sports.

Why isn’t there a swim team? Swim and Dive is one of those basic sports I thought every high school offered. Why have Howard County schools never offered it?
