Which one? is it optional for pre-K too?? I didn't see that on their website.

We go to Hume Ave. For pre-K, optional under 5 years old, iirc. The Virginia state health dept has a 5+ mask requirement so that's out of their hands.

not for long!! Maybe once the requirement falls and each school can make their own decision, they'll similarly make it optional.

Why wouldn’t you wear one if you are fully capable? We should be helping out our community, not searching for ways to be selfish.

Nope. Look at what Europe and the UK do - no masks under 5, some countries no masks under 8. Don't make toddlers carry the burden that grown adults should be carrying.

+1. Not to mention, tabulate the number of times the kids take the masks on and off all day- at our center it is 6 times. Most young kids wear cloth masks you. It’s theater. Maybe theater made sense in March 2020, but we know more now. It doesn’t make sense.

Not to turn this into a mask debate, but....
plethora of studies out there to confirm that the costs to young children of wearing masks (actual verified costs, in terms of developmental delays and psychological impacts) far exceed any supposed benefits.

So I’ve long suspected this, but can you help a tired mama out and share some links?

Absof'inglutely! So glad i'm not the only one who feels this way. DESPERATE for a preschool/preK (and actually elementary here soon) school in NoVA that makes them OPTIONAL. BECAUSE, AS THEIR PARENT, MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS SHOULD BE WITH MY CONSENT ONLY.

How do you cope with the necessity to wear pants everyday? Shouldn’t that be an individual decision?

I've changed my mind on this -- for full day daycare, unless the daycare is making concerted efforts to mask, ventilate, and social distance, just take the masks off.

It's mostly COVID theater in my 3yo's daycare. They wear masks, some better than others and mostly cloth. But they have two snacks and lunch daily and are not 6+ feet apart during the meals. I arrived last week at the end of snack time and several kids were roaming maskless. The kids sit on the floor nearly shoulder to shoulder (the school send photos). I was looking into getting KN94's for my little guy, and I think I will - for when we take him places (airplanes, groceries) where we can keep our masks on and can monitor him.

I have a friend in LA whose daycare keeps the windows open all day and asks parents to bring in blankets. The don't eat there, as it's just for mornings. And they mark the floors so kids stay distanced. They even wear masks outside. In that school, good masks make sense. Not sure they do much in my kid's classroom.

And I'm the mom who kept my kids home the first week back after winter break and spent the last two weeks picking my ES kid up for lunch so he wouldn't have to take his mask off all day. So I'm definitely tending toward the more cautious. But yeah, masks for the littles when they eat and spend all day there -- likely not terribly helpful.

OP here - asking again now that the elementary schools are mask-optional - any preschools in Alexandria not requiring masks or at least allowing kids to unmask outside? Thanks!
