Kids at the dog park

Anonymous
Under ten, it’s a no from me.

A lot of dogs don’t seem to fully understand that little kids aren’t puppies.

To some degree but I took my kids with strict instructions to standby by me and not to interact with dogs. They were (uncharacteristically) well behaved. A dog approached and began to bite my younger child and when I asked the owner to leash his dog, he started screaming at me. I’m sorry, kids are people and dogs are dogs. If dogs bit people they are dangerous. As long as kid walk is the rules and abide by them, they should be able to be at the dog park. Dog people are crazy.

This story is so bizarre.

Your children do not belong at the dog park. The fact that they were standing by you doesn't change that. Also, a dog was biting your young child, and you stood there and asked someone to leash the dog? You didn't move your child to safety? You just let the dog bite your child?

Truly nuts. It's the one place dogs can be off leash and they are there to be dogs. No, they shouldn't bite, but you also shouldn't have a kid there FFS. Dog people are crazy? Listen lady, I have 2 3 year olds and 2 big dogs between 1 and 3 years old. You're the nutter for setting your kids down in the middle of a dog park. Crazy? Idk but you sound slike a horrible parent.

I don't agree with bringing kids to dog parks, but the owner really should have gotten their dog under control. Dog parks have signs stating that all dogs showing aggressive or hyperactive behavior need to be removed. If a dog were biting an adult, the owner would be responsible for stopping the biting and removing the dog if needed. Dogs also need to be taught that biting ANY human, adult or child, is unacceptable. I don't bring my kids to dog parks, but if someone else did and my dog bit them, you bet my dog would be disciplined and removed.

Dog owner would also be legally liable for a bite, especially if the child is above the required age. Mom could call animal control and have the dog removed and quarantined for rabies, and possibly destroyed if the bite was severe enough. People can whine all they want that kids shouldn't be in dog parks, but ultimately, the dog owner is responsible for preventing bites to humans.

OP I think your DH is taking a huge risk taking young children when you gave no idea of the temperament of the other dogs there.

The story is probably fake. No parent would just stand there while their child was being attacked. Kids don't belong at dog parks, period. The people who take their children are stupid and recklessly endangering their children. They are also likely violating the rules of the dog park. I don't even know of any that allow children. My local dog park doesn't allow children under 12, responsible adult supervision required.

I think this is incredibly risky for both kids and dogs. DH thinks I’m ridiculous.

What day you DCUM?

Tell your dh to stop bringing your kids to dog parkd. They do not belong and could get hurt.
