My son (4) asked me what girls pee out of bc they don't have a penis. He asked if they pee out of their butt, and obviously I said no, but then I really struggled with what word to use! At first I said "vagina," but that's not really correct, and neither is vulva. Urethra is the right answer, but boys have that too, so it seems odd to say boys pee out of a penis and girls pee out of a urethra (since technically everyone pees out of a urethra). I ended up just sticking with vagina.
Sigh. |

Vulva
Keep her nails trimmed and hands clean and don't sweat the touching so much. If she's hurting herself she will stop. |
urethral meatus |
It’s really funny that you lecture about using the correct name, but then use the wrong name. I also use vagina, but I know it’s technically incorrect and don’t lecture others about what to say. |
You need a speculum and a goose neck lamp to get a good look at a vagina

Vulva. It was uncomfortable at first but now we’re used to it. Though it is still sometimes hard to keens straight face when she bumps herself of the playground bars and hollers out “ouch! I hurt my vulva!”
To the PP with the issue about the urethra, we’ve just explained that to the kids. Both boys and girls pee out of a urethra but the girls urethra has an opening in her vulva and the boys has an opening in his penis, so we just say vulva and penis. I’m sure it’s not really sinking in and its likely not 100% anatomically correct still, but I feel better doing it that way. We’ve now had to name the anus is for both kids and I’m finding that very uncomfortable. I wish I had started earlier so I was used to it too! |
Please use the correct words. Its a penis. Its scrotum. Its vulva. Vagina. Just like its leg, knee, armpit, etc. JFC. |
Thats a perfect conversation to have. Boys and girls have urethras. Boys have penises and girls have a vulva/vagina. The vulva is outside the vagina is inside. You have an inside part too called the corpus cavernosum and corpus spongiosum. Those are big words right! And they have big jobs. Even though boys and girls have different body parts some parts are the same. Can you name another part that both boys and girls have? |
Why would you use a word that applies to another part of the body? That’s like calling a boy’s penis his “leg”. |

Vulva. Labia. I don’t see a need for cute names for body parts when discussing bodily functions. .
One of my friends taught his girls to call it a “tulip”, for which the irony was too much for me. |
| Not vagina, that’s not any better. I had to break it to my college roommate that she does not pee out of her vagina. |
It’s better than tulip! |

I personally think the whole thing should be called a vagina. And not all the little parts with different names. I know the proper terms, but I think vagina should be the "general term" for the area when you aren't referring to something specifically.
Side note- my grandma told us once that there were only 2 holes. We tried convincing her that pee doesn't come out of her vagina but she didn't believe us. She didn't graduate middle school, but she was a smart person. She had 5 kids too and still didn't know that. |
Vagina is the general term. It’s just on dcum that some strange people like to talk about vulvas. Nobody normal says that. But you should use the words penis and vagina, not “cute” words. Doctors understand those real words, police and teachers understand those words. That’s important for the protection of your child. |

What cute name are you looking for? flower, cookie, tulip? Those are the “cute names” I’ve heard. But what would happen if someone were to touch your daughters vagina, vulva and she didn’t know the correct term for it? She could tell her teacher, “so and so touched my flower last night!” Or “my cookie is red today”. Most teachers won’t dig further into that. That will take those statements as they are.
Please please please for the safety of your child, teacher her the correct words. |
