I just watched that and kids can be awful to teachers!! Read some of the comments about kids making up stories about abuse. One said a girl tried to say her teacher sexually assaulted her but when asked what day it happened, the girl kept saying a day when the teacher wasn’t even at work. Yes there are really some AWFUL teachers out there. But kids can be AWFUL too!! The awful teachers are worse as they’re abusing kids… but the awful kids are causing a lot of the better teachers to quit.

It’s more of a problem is middle and high schools, of course. But I’ve even heard of upper elementary kids purposefully being awful and trying to get the teacher “in trouble” for fun.

So I’m a bit off topic but teaching is a very stressful job. The man in that video looked like he was about to SCREAM but knew that wouldn’t be good so he just left. And look at how those kids thought it was funny and worth recording.

Yes even good teachers always have room to grow and make mistakes like making yelling at a challenging student. But admin need to offer better supports. A lot of parents need to do a better job. Teachers aren’t their parents. They have lots of kids to TEACH. They can try to teach academic subjects and how to be a better human, but it would help if parents tried to teach how to be a decent human and behave and then teachers had more time to focus on academics. And good ones didn’t quit because they try hard but end up breaking when kids and/or parents cross the line and are too disrespectful too often.

I don’t think it’s the hardest job in the world, but teaching is HARD and required SO much patience!! And I honestly think kids are getting worse because they think being disrespectful and filming it is funny. Who needs to learn and get a good job someday when you can just be an uneducated idiot who makes YouTube and Tik Toc videos, right?!

I’m genuinely scared for this generation of kids. Gen Z or whatever they are currently in k-12.

Girl what are you even talking about. OP witnessed this WITH HER OWN EYES.

I do twice a month- helping with copies, laminating, cutting, etc. Volunteers don't do the work in the classroom (for various reasons, not the least of which is COVID) but I did happen to pass by one of the other first grade classes walking down the hallway and one of the students (who was at the head of the line) was walking very very quickly. When she reached the classroom, the teacher said something to her and I believe she rolled her eyes or something and the teacher responded "You are the most disrespectful girl I have ever met in my life." and then an aide said "I've already told her she's on the wall at recess" and then the teacher gestured toward the student and said "absolutely pathetic."

This is a teacher that does yell and is very strict. I try not to judge- it's a stressful year for everyone and lord knows I wouldn't always be patient Ms. Sunshine if I was a teacher. But IDK, something about this just made my heart sink. Am I overreacting?

I'm a teacher and have my very low moments. However, this is horrible. I hope no one would treat a child like that. I'm sure that child heard (maybe just a little) and knew (how could she not?). I can tell you sometimes when I'm alone with another teacher I will say horrible things (mostly that I don't mean) to vent, but I dearly hope it never leaves the ears of my confidant.

If you REALLY witnessed this, I would probably say something. Two adults should never be ganging up on a FIRST GRADER.

Jesus, that's awful. I have one child who has emotional regulation issues at home, but I am so grateful he can hold it together at school because I am terrified of him hearing this harmful language and internalizing these messages. I fully understand how hard it is to be a teacher to 20 terrorists at the same time. But, ya know, that's one reason I am not a teacher to young kids.

That is not constructive at all. I would report it. What grade did this happen in?

Some of these kids are little terrors and I don’t blame the teacher for feeling how ever she does, but none of us can be a slave to our feelings.

I'm not either of the PPs. I'm teacher PP from above. No, it's not acceptable. I also don't think it's "normal" or "common". If I heard another staff member talk like that anywhere outside of the teachers lounge or a bar (as they were sobbing into their cups about the horrible day they had) I would be saying something to them or someone else - You don't talk like that about a first grader anywhere within earshot of another first grader. You don't gang up with your para on the first grader either.

You may absolutely correct behavior, "Larla, it is very rude to pick your nose and wipe it on your desk" or "Larla, please enter the classroom politely - walking, not running, and saying 'hello' as you enter". But that doesn't sound like what was happening.

Echoing the other teachers here: please say something. All schools have “those teachers” and it’s really hard as peers to try and get them to fix that behavior. Parents bringing it to light can be a huge help

And to answer your topic question, NO amount of yelling or harsh words is "normal" or appropriate. Some teachers get away with that kind of behavior but it is harmful to the students and should not be tolerated at all.

Was the child black?

Umm are you serious? This is a 6 year old. I don’t care what the 6 year old was doing - you don’t call a six year old “absolutely pathetic” to their face. I get teachers venting in the teachers lounge about how terrible some of their kids are but not to the child’s face. Instead the teacher should have corrected the behavior and disciplined the child if necessary (by focusing on the child’s actions instead of calling them names). My son is in second grade and his teacher is extremely strict. At first I was taken aback but my son loves her. She clearly knows how to maintain order in the classroom while getting the kids to learn. She has zero tolerance for bad behavior yet would never call a child names or put them next to a wall. Clearly this teacher is a bad teacher who has no idea how to discipline children that age.

Age is only a number. 2 years ago a 6-year old stabbed a teacher with scissors.

Wow! Very interesting timing. I’m in the same boat. I volunteer weekly and every time I hear this teacher yell at the kids it breaks my heart. It truly sucks the joy out of me and I know the kids are scared. I finally broke and just cried one day and how absolutely mean she was to this poor kid. I did speak with the principal and it seemed like he took my concerns slightly serious although he said he wasn’t sure how to handle it or if was truly emotional abuse. I no longer volunteer sadly. Miss those kids. Anyways I’m sad that I left but I HAD to say something and could no longer go home at night just ignoring it. Anyways. Good luck!
