Is this like National Merit? National Merit is competitive I understand but it looks like many students in our county get national merit semifinalist/ commended. Is Coca Cola similar or is it even more competitive?

Much more competitive, and prestigious. Very helpful for T20 admissions.

Thank you for sharing this info. Very helpful for rising seniors. Are there other merit based scholarships that we can look into? I am now aware of National Merit, Coca Cola, any others similar?

My DS will be a senior next year. He took SAT past month and scored 1580, is a club captain in a few school clubs. Outside of school he has a black belt in karate and teaches students. He has taken some AP's in freshman and sophomore years and scored 4's and 5's. What are his chances if he applies for the above scholarships? Does he need to be doing something at a very high level?

My DD is in an all girls school, national level swimmer. She also does community service activities at her school. She tells me that some girls in prior years have received the Coke recognition, but they have been doing activities at a very high level, in school and outside of school.
Any parents here whose kids have received this recognition can enlighten us?

Posse Scholarship, it looks for leadership qualities. You have to be nominated by your high school for it.

My DD from FCPS school got an email that she is a regional finalist for Coca-Cola Scholar. Any one can share their experiences on what this means. She is from a small school (not TJ) and their school has not had one for many years.

My niece in CA is a regional finalist. We went through this process last year for my DD (she was a semifinalist) who did not make it to the next round. Congrats to your DC! It is a great achievement! I think her school will be very proud of her.
If I remember this correctly, there are some thousands of semifinalists and gets narrowed down to few hundreds, so the finalist stage is extremely selective. You should update schools on her achievement!

My DS received an email last week that he was not selected from DCPS. He made it to semifinalist level.

Has the list of finalists been posted some place? Our magnet school had a few semifinalists, and would be interested to see how many made it to this level. My DS is a junior and may be applying next year. Any advice from OP on what he should focus on?

Easy, tiger mom. Sounds like your son is already doing something at a very high level. Have him apply this summer.
