Sick college student....

You picked him up for what? He is capable of reading the syllabus and figuring out what he needs to do. Obviously he needs to send out an email to all his professors. I wouldn’t jump in for this crap though. He is an adult… let him figure it out.

People like you should not have kids.

I know..sick is no excuse He is doing his best to stay up to date online, but has 2 major essays and test. So far he has been asleep.

Worried parent...I guess he will just suffer the low grades and it is what it is?

Of course sick is an excuse. It’s practically the best excuse, short of a death in the family or your dorm burning down or something.

If a student contacts me to say they’re super sick, what they’re doing to catch up, and what they need or when they expect to return/catch up I am generally fine with it. Even better if they’ve participated and come to office hours, because I already will trust they are trying.

+1 I once had a student who had a pretty serious surgery during the semester and didn't ask for an extension! Don't live like that my young friends.

+1. You can guide him but you’re treating him like a 10 year old. How did he even get into college if he doesn’t even know he should contact his professors. He will survive and get through it.

Both of my college kids have been sick, one of them twice. Not sure it it’s making up from missed germs during covid but probably the sickest they’ve ever been. Hoping next semester is healthier for all—it’s hard to keep up when they feel awful.

I used to be a prof. I just want a heads up and evidence of handling the situation like a grownup.

+1. Make sure to avoid drinking too much, though.

This also applies to other symptoms that can cause dehydration.

Adding that a risk of drinking too much is water intoxication, which can be life-threatening.
