LC has become the new boogie man. Much of this thread is silly hysterics.

The results speak for themselves.

I don’t know. My 6th grader can barely read. He knows the first letter but can’t read a full word that he doesn’t already know. My 1st grader was taught phonics and reads on a 4th grade level.

But this could also just me your kids. I mean my 4th grader is reading on a 12th grade level. He wasn't taught phonics. He is actually a true sight reader. My first grader is being taught phonics and reads on a 1st grade level. The best method is going to change depending on the child. The problem is ignoring one method over another and not working to teach kids using the method they need .

this explains why APS is moving away from LC but it’s only at early ES right now

This is actually not the case. Reading in is always learned phonetically. Some kids learn to read well not because of whole language instruction but in spite of it. Whole language instruction has zero basis in how people actually learn to read. It is based on the premise that reading comes naturally to humans like speaking. Which, as you probably know, is wrong.

And for what it’s worth my kids both learned to read in APS schools and are extremely advanced readers so I am not freaking out. All this information is pretty easy to find on google scholar and in books on reading.

Thanks for linking that. I meant to read it but never got around to it.

I am really pleased. It’s unfortunate that whole language instruction has been so harmful to kids’ education but at least they are fixing it. Thank you to all the parent groups who raised hell.

I’ve read many screeds against her, but wanted to know why DCUM is so down on its use at APS

Because our kids can’t read. Teacher education in the US is a joke. LC came from Columbia — the best education school in the country.

Teacher education everywhere is not really based on how kids learn. It's based on how the education reformers since the late 19th century wanted kids to learn and teachers to teach, and it's been impervious to change by anyone except more educrats since.

This is true!! I really wish I had understood this before. I just trusted that schools of education knew what they were doing. It’s mindblowing that they don’t.

i have one kid who is fine in HS and another on 7th struggling bc she guesses words. it worked for some and not for others. it think it comes down to leaning differences. i fortunately for us lost of $ in literacy programs and tutoring for intervention. Not dyslexia but reads like it to someone who doesn’t knw

The way writing is taught in ES is garbage. It's painful to teach and to learn.

we have invested heavily outside of school for writing. Both my kids can now write a solid essay that we can read and understand now

most kids in Public school cannot write. i can’t tell you how many HS teachers and college professors talk about the lack of writing skills

Honestly I couldn't write until law school when I finally had folks seriously editing my work. Now I write for a living.
