New Youngkin ad starring a parent who wanted Toni Morrison's 'Beloved' removed from schools because

Other parents have held similar views as this parent over the years. They've generally been ignored.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Beloved is written by a Black woman and is about the horrors of slavery and how difficult it is for Blacks to truly escape that past.

How long before Youngkin tries to twist this in with his nonsensical CRT stuff?

But it looks like parents and kids have always had the choice to request an alternative? The law was about notification of sexual content?

I was undecided who to vote for in this election, but for Youngkin to placate the entitlement of mothers like this?
Well, it's sealed the deal for me.

This ad was a huge mistake.

Literally thought this was an ad for Terry

It gave her 17 year old son NIGHTMARES. 🤦‍♀️

I had a visceral cringe for this mother/son snowflake duo while reading this article.

If this mom doesn't want her kids exposed to college level readings like Toni Morrison's Beloved, then she shouldn't enroll them in AP courses which have college level books... or better yet, send your kid to private... or best yet,
homeschool him.

Holy f**k.

Yep...more projection from the right. As usual.

These types of parents aren’t satisfied with limiting their own kid’s education, they want to control your child’s education now. See that crazy lady wanting LGBTQ books banned who ended up starring in a Youngkin ad. He is fully supportive of these types of parents controlling the education— he wants a “crt ban” just like Texas that has resulted in tons of books banned and teachers told to teach “both sides” of the Holocaust.

Yup, Virginia already allows parents to opt their kids out of books.

The characters are shallowly conceived, the writing itself is poor (bad sentence structure that made this editor cringe), etc. I was really surprised it received so many kudos, but then I wasn’t. Life is short, and there are so many better books to read.

You sound like a fool. Do yourself a favor. Don’t say this out loud in real life.

What I find amazing is that after reading Beloved, the conservative religious mom felt compelled to push for a ban on this, and similar books, and promote stricter rules against teaching about the atrocities and gruesome nature of slavery through literature. A compassionate, normal human would’ve been shocked and appalled by slavery itself (not the book) and how harrowing it was to live through . If only she’d have put a scintilla of that effort into combating the long lasting effects of slavery on AAs today. But no, she went the white fragility route

Please share with us some examples of the poor writing in Beloved.

Good.

Hmm. Both Jennifer McClellan and Sam Rasoul supported the legislation that this mother favored, and which McAuliffe vetoed. Guess they are to be ignored as well.

OP- the link you provided specifically stated that this mother was not trying to have the book removed from schools. Your post is false.

And, there is this....
