…she asks with her eyes wide and her mouth open. Oh my stars and garters, who would ever consider sports when picking a high school???

Hundreds of smart parents and kids have made the choice to play for Sal and Vin at Achilles and St. John's. STJ Varsity is 9-1. The JV is 6-1. Achilles 07s, 09s, 10s, and 11s are all among the top teams in the area. Check out a practice or a game and talk to the coaches and parents. I hope your son finds a great fit.

OP here -- thanks very much! Yes, I plan to meet the coaches later this month. My son is tough, and I think he could put up with just about anybody, but I won't be comfortable if the coach is a jerk. And we don't plan to join Achilles, so if that is needed to get playing time at SJC, then we will pass. We really like SJC as a school, so just need to figure out the soccer piece. I am hoping all of the concerns about the coaching staff is overblown.

Search the soccer thread for "Sal" or for "Achilles" and judge for yourself.

Is that the Samba Boyz?

No. SJC = St John’s College High School in DC

(Not SYC in Springfield, VA)

PO very well knows this is not SYC. They just ask this question on every other thread to keep their name out here.

No one cares pp.

And that name is.......ANONYMOUS

Sounds like the OP has the right idea to talk to the coaches and see the team play. To PP: Reading comments on an anonymous message board is not an effective way to "judge for yourself."

Most the boys left Achilles and applying what they're learning/developing to their school team. It's been and continues to be a good season for them.

OMG . Do not talk to the HS coaches. WTF? I can tell you are HS specifically sets the tone that parents have no say and they will not communicate with them. It's HIGH SCHOOL. Your kids shows up, tries out and if he/she makes it, you can show up and watch the games. Any discussion of playing time, position, etc. is for the player only. IF you, as a parent, were to call up a HS coach and start asking questions and bragging on your son, there would be a little asterisk next to his name. The politics may have worked in Club soccer. They will not work in HS.

To the PP -- that's not what anyone was saying or suggesting. This thread started by one person asking others for any HELPFUL information about the SJC Boys Soccer program.

If you are potentially interested in other WCAC boys soccer programs, check out the Heights. The coach is great. I am not affiliated with the Heights. I think the GC and GZ coaches are decent but have witnessed dirty play by GC this season and borderline dirty play by GZ. That really bothers me as the quality of refereeing is such around here in HS that often the players are not sufficiently protected. Don't know much about SJC other than the team is very good this year.

They have freshmen, JV, and Varsity squads plus large rosters? How many soccer players does this school have?

Studs up challenges that can break legs, repeated tackling from behind resulting in cards, prearranged set pieces in which some hacker with a mullet tackles the man marking GC's target.

Mullet? That’s a lacrosse player that doesn’t really know soccer. That’s the problem with HS soccer.
