Most of the departures were in the classes that can get (and most likely already are) vaccinated.
ES: 295 -> 284 (-4%)
MS: 204 -> 177 (-13%)
HS: 212 -> 177 (-17%)

Fairfax's virtual program was limited to those students with a certified medical reason, and its enrollment was 0.2% of the entire student body. Applying that same percentage to APS, you can extrapolate that it would be 54 students if APS would have limited their program to kids with certified medical reasons.

I've seen the per class data and I'm seeing that English Learners are significantly underrepresented in the VLP. Beyond the demonstrated inferiority of virtual education, this program also has an equity issue.

For ELD (English learners), I'm seeing:
• 5 for ES
• 25 for MS
• < 20 for HS

Considering ELD students are 24% of the student body for ES and 19% for MS and HS (as of 2017), a proportionate amount would be:
• 71 for ES
• 39 for MS
• 40 for HS

I’ve FOIAed the data and will share it on this thread once I receive it.

How is this an equity issue?

doesn't everyone know? equity is something you just talk about, not something you actually DO something about. if that wasn't the case, there would be no virtual option at all, and we can't have that!

If you want to see just a sampling of the waste, see this staffing of classes with real APS teachers at the high school level (all of which students are eligible for vaccination):

US & VA government: 4 of 27 kids max

Here's a specials teacher, Mr. B:
Adaptive PE 9: 0 of 35 kids max
Adaptive PE 10: 5 of 35 kids max
Health & PE I (Class #1): 6 of 35 kids max
Health & PE I (Class #2): 28 of 35 kids max
Health & PE I (Class #3): 24 of 35 kids max
Health & PE II (Class #1): 16 of 35 kids max
Health & PE II (Class #2): 23 of 35 kids max

I’m glad Mr. B has one class with 0 students because 7 classes is a ridiculous teaching schedule. 6 classes is fine.

How long is each class? Assuming each is about an hour, that’s 7 hours of health and PE. I want that job LOL.

At last APS board meeting, one public comments speaker in a crying complaint stated his 8th grade (presumably vaccinated) was in the VLP because he "hated school." Shockingly, the speaker still did not remove him from the VLP when he didn't have a number of teachers, unlike a lot of parents did per the data above.

And the parents are teachers at APS. Further showing our teachers don’t have the best judgment.

When I taught high school, each teacher taught 5 classes a day. I'm not sure how that's changed with block scheduling now. 7 means no planning time at all.

What planning is needed for health and PE?! Come on now.

There are actually standards and skills for HS health and PE. It’s an actual job. Stop being an a-hole.

VLP should not be an option for kids that "hate school"...

Good thing that judgmental a-holes on DCUM don’t get to decide.

+ 1

So much for equity.

F equity.

x1000 Gosh. 7 class is too many. 6 is fine. If he has 7 classes then he doesn't have any planning time I don't think. He needs planning.

I am surprised the drop is so low. I don't understand why people are slamming VLP. If kids are finding it a good fit for them then go for it.

That means getting paid extra for each period taught beyond 5.
