Third Grade AAP math

As someone who completed a lot of advanced math in college and grad school, there seems to be little benefit of being perpetually 1 year ahead in math. The main advantages are to provide a little more challenge so kids don't get bored and to get them away from "the kids who can't think good"

They do both 3rd grade and 4th grade. Remember-the kids did grade 2 math the previous year-they can't just skip to 4th grade math. It's faster paced and there is more of please explain your reasoning stuff.

yes, that's most of it. It's not one year ahead. It's being in a class that is able to move at the pace it's supposed to move at and being able to get time with a teacher who otherwise would ignore the kids who are on tract to work with the kids who struggle.

In 5th grade they will take the 6th grade SOL. Then they are advanced by 1 year. 3rd and 4th are not a full year ahead.
