tell me about colleges that didn't make your kid's list

Berkeley - made DC realize they want a less urban campus. They weren’t getting in anyway.

UC Santa Barbara. When we drove in my DD was like "Oh this is home", who could not love that view?? But as we walked around, YUCK, ugly campus, not homey. We drove out and she said, nope. Also did not like UC San Diego, kind of the same reason. She fully expected to love both.

Georgetown is one of those schools that looks great from the air but looks really dingy and, dare I say, ugly from the ground. There are only one or two beautiful buildings on campus and the rest are quite shoddily built.

There is the front lawn and Healy Hall, which are magnificent, but the whole rest of the campus is cramped and, frankly, not well maintained. It is a shame, my kid loved it on paper. Won't even apply now.

Not to mention all the construction... I don't know if that's over with now, this was two years ago that we toured but it was a hodgepodge of buildings and mostly under construction. Did not appeal.

Now I am worried because we didn't get to tour a dorm room this summer.

Wooster: too much marketing/too slick
Muhlenberg: not impressed
Dickinson: bland
Macalester: didn't like the area
Lawrence: bland/nothing special

Pitt: the fairly urban concrete high-rises without air conditioning for Freshmen combined with the church-like buildings they highlighted on the tour did not appeal to my senior at all.

villanova-- went up for open house a few weeks ago. Terrible interaction with faculty in a certain department & an awful tour guide who talked non stop about her sorority (and nothing else). Too bad, beautiful school with tons of great stuff, but my kid was done after those interactions.

But most of the actual dorms are fine--and some are really lovely. Unlike nearly every college who show off their best or at least the most typical, they show the worst possible room that you might get freshman year --just so you're not disappointed with what you get. (W&M parent).

Surprisingly Amherst. The tour really turned DC off. I have always like it. DH hated it.

One Instagram feed doesn't really represent "more Google searching." Come on.
