The Salamander OMG!!

There are nicer places elsewhere but honestly options in the DC area are generally terrible and overpriced. I did not want to fly with an unvaccinated kid or sit in traffic for hours, so my options were limited. Not everyone wants to spend a week at the beach or has the time to spend to fly to the south of France.

Exactly. They make money from people trapped in the DC area with terrible options.

Fact. It's obscenely overpriced, but so are Homestead, Nemacolin, Bedford Springs, etc. The food is so offensive that it's permanently off our list. I looked at Primland's prices over the summer and my eyes watered. $1400 a night for a weekend. Anywhere drivable to the DMV has raised their prices to make up for 2020.

+1 my parents just came back from two weeks in the south of france. Place was (comparatively) empty for September. My boss just extended her vacation there for another week for the same reason — too good to pass up.

have you seen the cost of flights, they are very high now

get used to it, supply and deman, we have an airbnb that people are willing to pay double the cost since last year

I think it costs a lot to run a resort in VA. I’ve noticed big price increases at other places I like too. Goodstone, glen gordon. And our favorite b&b in little Washington is gone.

We stayed at a really lovely B&B in Gettysburg and it was like $250 night for a two room suite (weekday). Beautiful antiques, complimentary non alcoholic beverages and afternoon snacks like cake in the living room, and lovely breakfast on the patio. I think it was called a Brickhouse Inn.

I agree a lot of local places really jacked up prices when people were t traveling due to covid. Deep creek rental prices were insane.

We won a weekend trip there through a school auction and I wasn't impressed at all. We won this in 2019 and used it in July 2019. The one thing I remember being the oddest to me was the outdoor pool closing ridiculously early. We had spent the day out exploring and doing activities in the summer heat and I was looking forward to relaxing by the pool for the evening with a book. Yeah, no, I think I was there for maybe an hour before someone let me know it was closing and I could relocate to the indoor pool area. I think it was around 5:30 or 6 pm! I could understand that closing time in September when it starts getting dark at around 7 pm, but in July when it's light out until 9 pm?!

If you do go there, skip all food on premises. There are so much better restaurants right down the road!

Food is horrible. I can't figure out the appeal other than the lobby decorations. It's beautiful at Christmas. Maybe go just for a cocktail, take some pics and the leave. Boring, overpriced and truly horrible food.

I remember that too. The outdoor pool also is not heated nd for some reason even at the height of summer it was cold. They also didn’t have enough umbrellas. I prefer going to the pool if the late afternoon or evening due to sun exposure and it closed early and didn’t have good umbrella coverage. Resort that expensive should have a heated outdoor pool opened six months out of the year.

And the indoor pool had annoying music blasting that was headache inducing.

Nope Nope Nope - I am not paying that money for such terrible accommodations. By far the most boring "resort" around.

I loved salamander. I went earlier this year and it was $700 per night. Yes, expensive but not much like it such a short drive.

We have a high income though so whether it is 500 or 700 or 800 not a big deal. I don’t think it is worth $1400 per night. Was it a holiday weekend?

The spa was nice. There is a pool. Perfect overnight trip.

For $500 or less per night we found it ok largely because it was so new and it was a short drive away. The food was mediocre, the pool area felt like a generic/boring community pool - not a nice resort pool. The only redeeming thing was the spa, which was very nice.

Once the prices went over $600/night we just wrote it off. When we saw the prices were $700+ we just laughed. We just think its a rip off at the current prices. We're HHI like PP mentioned but there's a fine line between not sweating the cost and being a sucker

I think at this point it’s for incredibly anxious people who can’t venture beyond Loudoun County. Those of us with money and without anxiety go to Europe.

It is all supply and demand. Same reason Residence Inn in OC has rates over 1k/night for some weekend.
