Do breastfed babies get sick (in 1st year)

Anonymous
My DD is 3.5 months and just got over her first cold. I am still BFing her. It is all about me taking her just about everywhere so that I don't go insane staying at home!

Also, colds come from germs, not from cold weather. However, babies cannot regulate their temps as well as adults, so ...maybe it's an old wives tale that has benefits in other ways?

My first baby never got sick until 18 months. It's because she was a first and not in daycare.

Baby #2 I breastfed for an entire year. He has had minor coughs and colds since he was about 2 months old and has had only about 1 week without a runny nose for his whole life. He's constantly around big kids with all their germs. Breastfeeding is not a magic medicinal drink.

Do what works for you and your baby. Tell your mom to stop guilting you! If she wants proof, she can come wipe my baby's nose.

Hi-
Mine were breastfed until about 6 months and they both got sick. Colds, stomach stuff, you name it.

Same here. I exclusively BF for 6 months, and never supplemented. DC was sick about once a month after 3 months. It mostly depends how many other people, especially other kids, they're exposed to!

But it might be good for their immune system to be sick. According to the hygiene hypothesis, they might be less likely to get allergies.

Sorry your mom is guilt-tripping you on this.
