Health and Medicine
| My 70 y.o. aunt was just diagnosed. TIA. |
| Among other things, medication for schizophrenia can cause tardive dyskinesia. |
|
I keep seeing commercials for some medication that may have caused this in some people and there is a medical malpractice suit going on.
The lawyers are awarding vicitms a ton of money. |
| I think the medicine is Reglan and they specifically mention older women. So might be worth looking into. |
| it's a side effect of long term use of many psychiatric drugs, particularly the older drugs. may be a side effect of other similar drugs too. |
| In years past, you saw a lot of it in people who took Mellaril and Haldol, both of which are prescribed for mental illnesses. I believe Thorazine caused it as well. But, these medications went out of vogue in the 70's or 80's. Tardive dyskinesia causes involuntary muscle movements. The most common thing I've seen was tongue movements. |
| OP here, yes she was on Reglan for a long time and recently switched docs and the new doc stopped the rx right away. The assumption is that it caused this trouble. But I'm more curious if anyone is living with it or knows someone living with it. Long term life effects? Thanks. |
| 13:00 here. I have known many people who lived long term with tardive dyskinesia. Like I said, the tongue movements were the most common long term effect I saw. Some people get better when the medication is stopped and some don't. |
