Ask the (former) DC Urban child!

Anonymous
I lurk on here all the time as a new mom and it occurred to me that it seems like most of you didn't grow up in DC, so I thought I would put myself out there as a resource since I was/am the child of a DCUM.

Grew up in Ward 3, youngest of four, both parents with professional degrees, attended Beauvoir, Lafayette (DCPS) and NCS (my siblings all went to different middle/high schools so ask me about Sidwell, GDS, and Holton). Did all the enrichment programs, private school testing etc. Went away for college and medical school and am now back, married with a new baby. I'm still very close with my friends from elementary and middle school and my parents still live in the house I grew up in.

Ask me anything!

A lot of DC private school kids do drugs. most start around 14-15, when the parents feel comfortable leaving them alone when they travel for work. The mosre diplomat/state department kids your teenager knows, the more likely they are to have opportunities to experiment. Pot, cocaine and prescription drugs are big around here (everyone knows someone on ADHD medicine or anti-anxiety pills).

I'm sorry that this offends you, it was meant as a resource. I know that if/when I move to another city to raise my kids I would definitely be interested to speak to people who had actually grown up there and gone to the schools/programs that I was thinking of enrolling my kids in.

I think the best thing about growing up in DC is that you are exposed to so much that most people don't get a chance to grow up around, like all the museums and international organizations and resources. The hardest thing about growing up here is that it can skew your definition of "normal." Most of my hometown friends and I agree that when we went to college and met kids who had grown up in other places, it was an adjustment. Part of that it just growing up in a city, but part of that comes from that fact that D.C. is a pretty unique city that is centered around the government and being the Nation's capital. Also I always wished that I was from a "real state" growing up
