Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)

We were notified of this testing coming up--could someone please explain what exactly it is?? Apparently all the second-graders take this test. What exactly does it identify? What is the test? What is the threshold and how many kids will be identified as "gifted"? And then, what happens if one's child is so identified? Clueless here. TIA.

| I don't know too many specifics about the test-google it. About 40% of MCPS students are labeled gifted so it means-above average. They say they take the scores in to account when planning classes but the trend now is towards homogeneous grouping so I don't think they mean much. Now with VERY high scores you might decide to take the additional test for a GT magnet. I would look for scores way above the cutofffs 95th plus percentiles on Terra Novas. |

If your kid does well on the math part, he or she may be eligible for accelerated math. My understanding is that MoCo is cutting back on the number of kids who are accelerated, but this test would still be used as one marker.
If your kid does well on the language part, it may change which table your kid sits at during language class, but not which language class. If your kid does really well on the whole test, in 3rd grade the school may recommend that your kid apply to an HGC. But, you can apply to the HGC even without the school's recommendation. |
I Another. Curiouse parent herem Do they test all 2nd graders? What kind of test do they use? |
| Yes they test all 2nd graders. You will get the scores at the end of the year. |
| We were notified about this test in an email from the school last week. It was supposed to take place today and tomorrow, but my DS said that he didn't have a test today. Does anyone know if they had the test? |
|
DC is sick--anyone know if there is a makeup day later in the year for this test? What happens if they miss it because of illness?
|
| There will be a make-up as well as a retest in 3rd grade for kids who were on the edge.. |
| did they actually have the test today? |
I just found out my child wrote the test yesterday. The school did not make a big thing out of it. I actually thought it would be tomorrow. I was trying to ask my son questions to see what they tested. He told me: " Mom, I would love to get tests like this every week. But the other children said they did not like it. I wonder why...I had so much fun, it actually tested knowledge..One child was late and he willl write the test tomorrow." That's how he explained it
|
| well he must be a precocious little genius. he really said "it actually tested knowledge?" get real |
He actually said that. I never knew what the test was about and the child was actually enjoying a different kind of screening. I thought the way he explained it was nice and informative for other parents. Why do you have to react like this? If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all. |
| What's the difference between the inview global gifted screening the 3rd grade test for highly gifted center eligibility? Can anyone describe the content in / type of test the highly gifted screening test? Is it more like an IQ test or more like an achievement test - what is it modeled on? |
He may be, but it's also possible that he has a strong verbal recall and is quoting the teacher. |

You can google inview and Raven and Terra Nova to get a feel for all three tests that 2nd graders get.
From what I recall after researching last year, Raven is more a logic test. Inview is a cognitive ability test. Terra Nova tests whether the child has mastered actual 2nd grade indicators. This can be a misleading test for children who are very far ahead b/c it may have been a year or two since they actually encountered some of the material. I found that my inview 99% math kid and very high raven score got in the low 90% on several parts of the terra novas. This is, apparently, very common. So, for the person who said 95% terra nova to look at HGC's, it really isn't that simple. I go much more by what I see and his teachers suggest rather than simply test scores. |
