Private & Independent Schools

I saw the thread on Sidwell Obsession, but I remember a time when this board was fairly heavy on Beauvoir. I haven't seen a Beauvoir thread in months!
What gives? Have folks learned all they can learn about the school? |
| These things go in cycles OP. I remember when every single thread was about Landon and now there are none. |
| Maybe people are realizing Beauvoir is not what it once was. I have heard from many people that the Beauvoir kids who move on to NCS/StA are the ones who usually need extra help and to be caught up to their peers who come from other privates and publics. In fact, the phrase I have heared repeatedly is that "B has, for too long, rested on its laurels." |
My DD who went to Beauvoir and is now in upper school at NCS is doing beautifully and getting great grades. Beauvoir is what it has always been. |

to answer the original question
maybe all the Beauvoir fans are still searching for the ex favorite (frequent poster on these boards) pedophile teacher since it is almost 3 years and he is STILL wanted by the FBI and local law enforcement |
| Oh wow. The gratuitous need to bash Beauvoir. Don't you folks have something better to do? |
Ha! Ha! But I bet you would have given your eye teeth for you child to attend!! Go on, admit it. It's an anonymous forum after all. StA and NCS are nit bound to accept Beauvoir students you know. |
Troll! |
| We've just learned not to take the bait on this board. The outlandish stereotypes of Beauvoir parents portrayed on this board, and the criticisms of our kids, don't really provide any incentive to engage. If I wrote that way about kids at a less well known school in the same manner, I'd be slammed, and rightfully so. But somehow it seems ok when it's about Beauvoir or a few other schools. After a bit of that, why would parents spend their time answering questions or providing their views? Seems to be the way several topics on DCUM are going, and it's unfortunate. |
| Nope, did not want my kids at B and not a troll. What I am reporting is anecdotal but is also true. Whether B parents on this forum want to admit it or not, this is what is being widely said and, in some cases, by B parents thensleves and by several StA and NCS teachers. |

PP, do you understand that parents at Beauvoir chose this school for their kids, and that we're neither naive nor uninformed? Yes, people talk about Beauvoir kids having a wider range of math skills than other admits to STA and NCS. That makes absolute sense to me. STA and NCS choose from among very talented third graders who are required to perform well on tests, but the kids Beauvoir don't need to do as well to be admitted. So what? It only takes a year or so for the Beauvoir kids who are somewhat behind the others to catch up. I'd much rather my kid be at Beauvoir, experience all it has to offer, and then work a bit harder in STA or NCS for a year or so if he or she is one of the Beauvoir kids a bit behind the others in math. Take a look at the high academic performers graduating from STA and NCS and you'll find that a strong portion of them went to Beauvoir. It all evens out very quickly, and to me the key is having your kids at a school that's right for them. Because my kids are at Beauvoir, which they love, they will also have a greater chance of being accepted to STA and NCS, which as of now would be our top choices. That some Beauvoir kids (and others) may need to play a bit of catch up in math or another area is barely even a blip on the radar for me.
Also, it's not that I'm unwilling to hear anecdotal or other views about Beauvoir, but the ugly, hateful stereotypes about the kids (essentially stating that they are like robots) and the parents (that we're a bunch of entitled snobs) is way off base and simply ridiculous. Those are the types of statement that I think discourage Beauvoir parents from commenting on this board. |
I do not think Beauvoir is as strong academically (and yes, math especially comes to mind) as some other area lower or PK-8 schools and think it is unfortunate that many people think it is. I would never say, and never have said, any of the things in your last paragraph. We are friends with a large number of families who have kids at Beauvoir and none of those people are any of those things (that you mention). You are the first person on this thread to use the word "robots" or "entitled" or "snobs" so, what exactly are you angry about? |
|
PP here. I'm not angry. The OP asked why Beauvoir parents don't post. If you look through the archives on this board, you'll find really awful, inaccurate stereotypes about Beauvoir parents and kids (as you will find for some other schools as well).
And I don't think that Beauvoir is behind other schools academically, though there is certainly room for improvement. I just think that to get into STA or NCS if you are not from Beauvoir is very hard, and that STA and NCS take mainly kids from the top academic (or other special talent) tier non-Beauvoir kids. That's not to say that the other schools are better than Beauvoir, just that only their top tier are accepted to STA and NCS and so parents at STA and NCS wind up comparing the top tier kids from other schools against the 75-90% of Beauvoir kids who go on the STA and NCS. Looking at the later years, though, I think even these relatively small distinctions among the Beauvoir/non-Beauvoir kids disappear. I will say that I'm very pleased that Beauvoir and other local privates are starting to look at different approaches to math education. |
| My DD is in upper school at NCS and a significant portion of the girls at the very top of the class were from Beauvoir. |
| 15:01 Why exactly do you think Beauvoir is not strong academically compared other pk-8 schools? If you don't even have a child there, how are you so certain it's "sup-par"? Clearly, that's an incendiary comment. |
