Elementary School-Aged Kids

My middle school child needs some extra attention, especially with his writing skills.
Has anyone else ever used Huntington, and if so, what sort of experience did you have? Thanks in advance! |
| I don't know if our experience will be helpful because my DS is younger but we had a very positive experience. My DS was diagnosed with ADHD (primarily inattentive) and learning disabilities. He had very poor reading/writing skills and poor comprehension. We were fairly desperate. I researched different places (including the tutoring list from FCPS) and costs. HLC was competitive priced, I liked that it had a curriculum, the tutoring accomodated our schedule and it was one-on-one. I also liked that we had periodic conferences to discuss DS's progress. We did it for about 9 months, 2-3 times a week and DS got caught up to grade level. I have to say that after 6 months, DS complained loudly about going but the tutors all said when he was in there, he really did good work. |
This is great feedback, thanks. |
| My MS son is just finishing up his HLC tutoring - 5 more sessions. When he started, he was reading at a second grade level and comprehending about 10% of what he read. His math was low grade level. His vocabulary was low for his age in some respects. He could not write in cursive and he could not construct decent sentences or paragraphs, which is crucial to BCRs. It took almost 10 months, but he is now completely on grade level with everything, which means that he achieved 4 years worth of progress. I don't know if they are competitively priced (I went for a program that we could reliably get to because it wasn't too far from our house), but it was well worth every penny I paid. |
| Huntington is a great program. They helped my son get to the root of his problems in school by firming up his basic skills, which made addressing his current challenges in school much easier. It takes a committment and involves some expense, but it was a lasting solution for my son. Good luck! |

Thanks for the feedback, this is OP here.
I signed my child up for testing on Saturday. Quick question: When he goes for his tutoring sessions, will he be doing his own homework under their guidance, or will he be doing additional work? (I'm just trying to prepare myself for any objections my child comes up with!) |

He will not be doing his own work. What you will find is that they provide a curriculum that addresses the reason that your child has problems in school. In our case, my DS never learned/internalized the basics that are taught in early ES, like getting the main idea or making inferences, which impacted his ability to comprehend the material he was reading and his ability to take tests. So, that is what his program focused on.
As far as objections from your child, surprisingly, we had very few. The worse was when he would go at 9 am on Saturdays because that ate into his sleep time. So, we rearranged his schedule. The staff did a great job with positive reinforcement and that, coupled with the success in school, was really motivating. |
