I think it is very important to remember that correlation does not equal causation - especially in the case of these findings. I am sure there are many factors which were not controlled for nor investigating when making these connections and assumptions.

Well, this is good news for Verizon. DH and I haven't had a land line in years, but now with a baby on the way, I'm more inclined to get one. We had planned to anyway for emergencies, but I'd rather DC talk to grandma and grandpa on a land line versus a cell phone if there's any possibility of issues with cell phones.
