Things to do in Pittsburgh

Anonymous
I will be in Pittsburgh in April with a 6 year old and a 3 year old. Does anyone have any ideas for places to go that kids that age might like? I will check if Kennywood is open, but most parks don't open that early. Bonus if any of these activities involve trains in any way (we did the incline last year - it was good but only took like 1/2 hour). Thanks!

Pittsburg has an awesome hands-on science museum.

Kennywood won't be open, but there is still a ton of fun activities to do with kids that age!

Children's Museum - http://www.pittsburghkids.org/

Science Center - http://www.carnegiesciencecenter.org/
*There is a miniature railroad on display at the Science Center. At least, I'm pretty sure.

Aviary - http://www.aviary.org/main.php

Zoo - http://www.pittsburghzoo.com/

Carnegie Museums - http://www.carnegiemuseums.org/
*The Carnegie Museums include the above mentioned Science Center, plus the History Museum, Art Museum and Andy Warhol Museum

Frick Art Museum - http://www.frickart.org
*It has a small museum, but has a nice collection of Frick Family vintage carriages and automobiles. Kind of neat

Phipps Conservatory - http://phipps.conservatory.org/

Schenley Plaza Carousel - http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM4J2F_Schenley_Plaza_Carousel_Pittsburgh_Pennsylvania_USA
*Located on Pitt's campus, it is close to the Carnegie Art and History museums. So if you decide to do those museums, stop by for a carousel ride.

All good suggestions, plus my kids' favorite: Sportsworks, which is pretty much across the parking lot from the Carnegie Science Center.

PS - you'll want to know that in Pittsburgh, it's Car NAY gee, not CARN a gee.

Sportsworks! thank you, I had been wondering what that was called (I was there ages ago, pre-kids, and thought it was awesome).

Really? I've always liked Pittsburgh, at least in the small doses I've been there (no more than 4 days at once).

You might also consider a day trip to Ligonier - visit Fort Ligoneir, Idyllwild park, Storybook Village - all are great for kids that age.

Boo, you're the worst.

Second the Carnegie museums and the Phipps Conservatory. I LOVED those as a kid. We went to Pittsburgh often, since my grandparents lived there.

I know I could look it up, but how far is Ligonier from Pittsburgh?

You should also go to the Warhol museum, FOR YOURSELF. And it's small and entertaining enough that your kids won't get bored.

Ligonier is about an hour from the east side of Pgh (eg Edgewood). You can also get to Falling Water in about 90 min if your kids are interested in that kind of thing - my brother and I certainly weren't at that age .

Hope you did. Though they probably didn't help your attitude much.

Had a blast there w/ my 6 year old. PP poster hit most of the stuff we did. We also toured the Frick house, but I think a 3 year old may be young for that.
