DC Public and Public Charter Schools
|
hi folks:
just wondering what schools currently feed to Deal and if anybody has a crystal ball and can speculate about whether or not that will change in the next few years... tia! |
|
Janney, Lafayette, Murch, Hearst, Shepherd (these probably won't change).
Bancroft & Eaton for now. These have fed other MSs and are more vulnerable. Deal is totally full and gigantic. It's only going to get worse as more upper NW kids stay with DCPS. Some of them will go private or go to Latin, but a lot will go to Deal. Deal needs to dump a couple of elementaries. |
| Wouldn't it be great if the interest in Deal was redirected at other middle schools (further East)? There has to be a way to encourage a cascading effect of schools improving from west to east in the city. (Not the only way to improve schools, but it looks effective thus far.) |
I would have more faith in a new charter middle school like Latin than I would in DCPS trying to roll families east into another quality MS. They sort of tried it with Hardy and instead blew it up. |
|
Meant to add:
I don't think they're serious enough about creating schools that do GRADE LEVEL WORK and serve advanced students, instead of teaching to the lowest common denominator. |
| 21:57 this is what I witnessed when I took a tour of Thompson Elementary. Was really shocked at what I saw being taught at a 5th grade level. |
| What were they doing at Thomson? |

One problem with a middle school improvement moving east, is that the schools directly east have been turned into "education centers" PreS to 8th, and the middle schools have been closed. So Shepherd's neighboring districts, Takoma, Brightwood, West, Whittier all have 6, 7, 8 in the elementary school.
In addition to the schools listed above as feeding into Deal, I think (but am not 100% certain) that children who live in the West & Oyster/Adams districts have the option of the education center for 6, 7, 8 or Deal. I think that the Bancroft district is split, only some addresses have the Deal option and OOB Bancroft do not (again I could be wrong). Two years ago there was talk of Eaton OOB only going to Hardy, and in boundary having the option of Hardy or Deal |
| Oyster-Adams kids seem to have a great choice, either stay with Oyster through 8 or go to Deal. |
Bancroft does feed into both Columbia Heights Educational Campus and Deal, and the inboundary area is split between the two (most of it is Deal). But I'm 90% sure that kids who complete 5th grade at Bancroft (including OOB) can choose to attend Deal. Also there's talk of having Bancroft also feed into Oyster/Adams middle school. |
| Hearst should feed to Hardy. Does not make sense to add it to Deal. |
Why not? It's walking distance to Deal, and in the past has fed to schools that fed to Deal. Having Hearst feed to Hardy would mean changing the middle school assignments for the neighborhood it serves. |
Because Deal is FULL. Furthermore, most of those students are OOB anyway, so walking distance isn't a compelling argument. |
| Well, it's a compelling argument for me. |

Here's an approach to better middle schools to the east, in this case Capitol Hill.
http://www.dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/Files/downloads/COMMUNITY/DCPS-Ward%206-Building%20on%20Momentum%20FINAL-%207-30.pdf It represents a lot of work by parents, particularly Capitol Hill Public School Parents Association. http://chpspo.org/ |
