High schools for nice kids?

Anonymous
Any high schools out there that you'd consider particularly good at creating a climate of... general niceness, for lack of a better term? My children are still in mid-elementary at a great pre-k-8 school. I fear for them, going out into a world of bullies, means girls, cut-throat academic competition, spoiled rich brats.... Any schools for nice, normal, kind kids?

Dont confuse the parents with the kids. In my experience at 3 different high schools (attended one and have kids at 2) the kids usually are nice.

Utopia High School. In addition to the nicest students, all the teachers have Ph.D.'s, tuition is $1,000 year, and the entire graduating class gets admitted to their first college of choice. I'll see you at dropoff!

The kid I know from WIS are all nice. FWIW, WIS is not my own DC's school (where I don't know as many HS kids and where the ones I do know are the children of friends so it's a biased sample).

With two kids at three schools, so far, I think the bullies, mean girls, etc. are much more of an issue during middle school. By high school the kids are more supportive, less competitive, and just nicer.

Where do you live OP? That will determine the answer. And, if you're Catholic -- that would be helpful to know too since some of the Catholic h.s. have super nice kids...some of the less elite ones.

I second Sandy Spring Friends HS. My kids attend and it’s great. (My older two attended two other different private schools so I have a comparison.)
I disagree with 14:11 “Don’t confuse the parents with the kids”. My experience is that rude parents raise rude kids. Of course there are some exceptions.
Somewhat agree with 15:05 that “bullies, mean girls, etc. are much more of an issue during middle school”. I think it depends on the school. One of the schools my DC attended there was quite a lot of FB bullying. Very sad. Several girls left mid-year.

Said by a person for whom appearing smart is more important than treating others kindly....

See, different environments value/encourage different sorts of behaviors. And there's nothing wrong with looking for a school where "don't be a jerk" is as (or more important) than "come out on top."

All high schools could use more nice kids.
