| I just bought some blood oranges for the first time. They are very sour. Is this how blood oranges are supposed to taste or is this yet another batch of inferior produce? Any experience with them? Thanks. |
| think about what they are, the red is from grapefruit |
| I have had some that were very sweet and others that were sour. |
Inject them with vodka; make a hump-day snack for yourself.
|
| The ones I have had were not as sweet as regular oranges but still pretty sweet. |
WTF!? This is not even CLOSE to correct! |
|
OP, no, that's not normal. Blood oranges should be as sweet as a regular orange, but taste a little bit like berries mixed with an orange.
The problem is, they don't really grow well anywhere in the U.S. -- Italy has the best ones (they are so abundant and good there, too). Your best bet is to pick blood oranges that have smooth, pliable peels (they'll be juicer and sweeter) with at least a hint of red in the peel. |

My Aunt in San Diego has a blood orange tree in her yard and they were the sweetest (and messiest) things I have eaten. Honestly, I am afraid to buy them at the grocery store.

| Like any produce these days it really differs but they are supposed to be sweet. The sweetest orange I've ever had was a good blood orange (bought from a produce stand in Rome). Not true that the red comes from grapefruit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_orange |
| Where did you find blood oranges? I have been looking everywhere in the area. |
| They're supposed to be sleep but are hard to find. I had some awesome red oranges last year called Cara Caras. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cara_cara_navel |
| oops - supposed to be "sweet". |

Whole Foods in Arlington sometimes has them, as does H-Mart in Fairfax.
I believe they are in-season Dec to May? |
| Trader Joe's has them now, too. |
