Both my kids have been baptised (catholic church) but as they are getting older, i would appreciate knowing what are the basic requirements to get them to 2nd grade communion? is Sunday school mandatory? if so, as of what age? thanks,.. |
Yes and yes.
First Holy Communion and Penance are taken seriously. I assume your kids aren't in Catholic school so they will need to attend CCD. In addition, you will need to start being a better role model for them - in terms of weekly (you can go to Mass daily too) Mass attendance since you need to be clear of mortal sin (ie skipping Mass) for you and your children to receive Communion. |
I just registered with a Parish this Sunday and I have to enroll the kids in CCD today. I was told that I have to start now if I expect DD to have her first communion next year. |
OP here= at what age does CCD start? (or grade).. I know they offer it as early as PS but that never existed when i was growing up. I remember going starting in first grade. |
I took communion twice this weekend after not having gone to church in 6 months. whoops. didnt know that was a mortal sin ... |
This is my mian motivation for sending my kids to catholic school. I hate the idea of CCD - just one more class/activity to schedule. |
I've never heard of CCD starting before 1st grade. Yes, to receive First Communion at the end of the 2nd grade year, your child will need to have completed the required religious education and received his/her First Penance. |
CCD starts in preschool. You can usually get your child in after, if space allows (depending on the parish), but expect to do an entire year of second grade at the very least in order to make first communion. See the latter of 14:19. OP, where are you? I know the Arlington Diocese is pretty strict, FYI. |
Start CCD in first grade. Our parish has it for kindergarten, but 1st grade is required to go to communion in second. And it's called PSR now, not sure what it stands for though. |
CCD requirement begins in First grade however you can start at prek--we have and we love it. I am not super super devout but want to be a good role model and my dd loves it. |
Most parishes in Montgomery County start CCD or SOR (name varies) in K (some have pre-K). All seem to require participation by 1st grade in order to be on track for penance and holy communion. Some parishes allow you to home-school, but that requires the parents to take a class, etc. Some parishes offer CCD on Sundays while others offer it during the week. You'll need to join a parish (call the rectory). Most of the parishes list this info on their website. Registration typically begins in early August. |
14:25 - I loved your post! It is nice to hear about people participating for non-selfish reasons! ![]() |
Don't be dissuaded or think you're "too late." I'm sure the Church will not penalize your child just because you may have missed a registration deadline. Someone in some parish will find room for her in a class and allow you to do any "catch up" work at home, if necessary. The main thing, as another PP said, is to get yourself on track so that you can share her growing faith with her. Sometimes I think having a child train to receive the sacraments has the added blessing of making us adults focus more on our spiritual lives and make more use of the sacraments ourselves. Good luck! |
OP bad Catholic mom here- Thank you all for your information- after 1st and 2nd grade - that's pretty much it, right? I mean, besides going to church- |
DS still goes to CCD in 5th grade. Doesn't complain. It's a nice group of kids and families. We plan to keep him there through confirmation and I wouldn't mind if he went on to participate in the high school youth group. |
