I'm looking to read a book about contemporary women that doesn't feel too much like chick lit. Sorry if that is a lame designation -- I try not to use the term "chick lit", but it seems the best way to explain what I'm after. Nothing where the protagonist is obsessed with shopping or her weight. Any suggestions? |
I LOVE Alice Munro's short story collections. I think you would like her stories, too. |
I have enjoyed several different books by Kristin Hannah...if you are interested, you could google Magic Hour and Winter Garden for brief descriptions. Neither protagonist is obsessed with shopping or her weight -- I promise! |
Sue Miller is a good writer. Her characters are nuanced and her stories are compelling. |
Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri (short stories)
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen (written by a man but with a female protagonist) A Gate at the Stairs--Lorrie Moore My Hollywood--Mona Simpson |
Second Unaccustomed Earth and add Lahiri's other book, Interpreter of Maladies. She also has a new book out -- can't remember the title. |
Just read Stiltsville, by Susanna Daniel. Beautiful (& realistic) portrait of marriage and family.
Also, Anne Lamott, Ann Patchett & Jane Smiley. |
