brown lentils, where to buy?

Anonymous
I've been to Whole Foods and TPSS Coop (Grubb Rd) and can't find any (on my way to TJ's now, but not confident I'll find them). I might not have looked everywhere in WF for them, but I figure if they carry them, they would be in bulk food with the other varieties. I have a lot of vegetarian slow cooker recipes that call for brown lentils, I assume because they take a long time to cook. Anyone found them locally or have a reliable substitute? Thanks!

Can't you just use the HarrisTeeter Naturals organic French green lentis as a substitute? Maybe I'm doing something wrong when I sub those in. Seems to still taste good.

Did you ask a sales/stock person? Frankly, I'm shocked that the WF doesn't carry them. They would either be in the bulk section, or possibly in the ethnic food section. These are EXTREMELY common, more so than the green or pink varieties. Even Safeway carries them/

Go to Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter... Green lentils are better so more specialized stores tend to carry them instead, but brown lentils are generally much more common (and cheaper). Generally, green lentils can be substituted in most recipes, and they will taste better, but brown are everywhere.

My WF has several types of lentils in the bulk section, but also bagged lentils (and other dried beans) near the packaged rice. HTH!

In the bag at Safeway, Giant, Harris Teeter, etc.

OP here - I just assumed since WF and the Co-Op didn't have them that brown lentils were fancier. I have lots of green lentils at home, so if it's a sufficient substitute I'll just do that. I did ask at WF and the Co-Op and both acted like they'd never even heard of brown lentils. Thanks.
