My first grade boy is going to three! birthday parties in the next 10 days for girls. I don't have a clue what to get for gifts, and even at a nice store like Childs Play the recommendations seem really awful (shrinky dink jewelry???) Anyone have any great ideas in the $25 range?
I don't mean to start a gender war, but I really wish they had Legos that were more girl-oriented... I don't mean princesses and whatnot, but something other than ninjas and star wars. It's such a good all-purpose present for boys - even my not very lego-obsessed boy is always happy to try a new set. I guess I'm just so surprised that even at this age the girls' toys are all so froufrou and hideous. But I guess the payoff for moms of girls is that the clothes options are just so much better! |
| my 7 yo actually loves shrinky dinks... but there are nice craft sets (like by melissa & doug) at most of these store that are good too. then there are always board games and books... really, it's not that hard. |

Yep, my 6 year old DD loves shrinky dink jewelry kits (or really any craft kit). I will echo the board games and books also. I think there are also some "girly" playmobil sets that are nice.

My 3 girls will play with Legos maybe once a year. Don't hold it against them. They just don't care. They did enjoy the Lego exhibit, though.
My current 7 yo girl loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, Mad Libs books, the electronic toy Bop It, a jump rope, anything involving drawing and painting and paper dolls. |

Craft sets are a good idea, or art supplies. What about those Klutz books that are an activity and book in one? You can get them at Childs Play as well as most book stores. Also, I'm pretty sure you can get legos that are not overly boyish. Look at their "city" line. My DD LOVES legos, as did I when I was young. Here are some ones that might be good:

| I like the gamewright games-- like sleeping queens, rat-a-tat-tat, etc. |
| My almost-7 yo DD loves legos, especially the Bellview ones with horses. She also likes craft kits, American Girl Doll anything - they have AG craft sets and stickers at Michaels for example, and American Doll books are sold at many area bookstores. Any girly book is also good. Webkins, card games and Breyers horses would also be good bets. |
| Legos? Maybe she doesn't get enough of them because they aren't girly and people don't think she might like them. Maybe she will become an engineer someday. |

My now eight year old loved all that craft stuff at 7 (still does). Anything crafty - those kits for making windchimes, make your own jewelry, paint a chair, you name it. She can spend hours making clothes for her dolls and animals too so just plain old supplies - felt, yarn, thread, glue (especially with glitter), beads, anything like this - would be a big hit. My daughter also loves making friendship bracelets so any of those kits (they have dozens of them in any child's store or craft store) would be great.
Also agree, anything American Girl. Kanani is the new one and my daughter is literally obsessed with Hawaii now. You could find out from the moms if the girls have an AG and if so, which one, and get some clothes or fun things for the doll, I am sure the girls would be in heaven as well. Even a gift cert to Am Girl (the Tyson's store is opening this spring) would be great. Have fun! I, on the other hand, hate buying presents for boys of this age...

| These were the popular toy this Christmas. I am a nanny and got these for a 7 year old girl. p.s they are cheaper at target! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003LQVTUK/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B003LQORCM&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1NZVYFPT1Y7TM1Y2K7GJ |
| A diary is also a nice gift. Barnes and Noble has some cute ones. |

I think my 7 yo dd will scream if she gets yet ANOTHER craft kit. She's not very girly, but still - there ARE other things out there.
Try hexbugs, a science set, ant farm, walkie talkies, k'nex. Heck, even zhu zhu pet puppies or little fur real pets. |

for a board game, try "pinkalicious scrabble." my 6yo loves it.
she also likes the city-themed legos. |
