any ideas about Mosby Woods Elementary

Anonymous
Hi,

Can people give opinions about Mosby woods? I am planning to move in summer and my child would probably go there.
Also my eldest daughter is in GT. So she mite go for the GT program in Mosby Woods.

I am still ambivalent about the school.

thanks,

It used to have a not-so-hot reputation. It was a title-1 school and had some gang issues (or at least hearsay about gang issues). Some upper-middle-class families who realized they were assigned to there looked for alternatives - private schools or move into another district. Then a new principal joined who is very involved. And they opened a GT program there which brought students from other schools. The school is no longer a Title 1 school. It's overall scores have improved. I haven't heard the word "gang" mentioned in a few years. I know several people there for the GT program who are very pleased with it. I wouldn't have a problem sending my child there. I was physically in the school one time, and the building is nice enough as well. Hope that helps a little bit.

'9' on GreatSchools
39% white, 32% Asian, 17% Hispanic, 11% Black
28% free-reduced lunches

Not sure how the GT center affects/skews these stats though.

if you want lily-white try the Fort Hunt/Waynewood area, if you want rich, try north Vienna/Great Falls/Langley. Or move further out if poor white people don't bother you the way poor non-white people bother you.

I live close to this school and a good friend's daughter went there for the AAP program. She was very happen with the program.

She was on the PTA and said there was some tension between the AAP parents and the base school parents. There was a perception (no idea if it is accurate or not) that the AAP center there caused them to lose their Title 1 status, which was not viewed as a good thing by many. The Title 1 designation brought extra funding that the school has now lost.

But I think that in many AAP center schools there is some tension between the center and the base school. Or when there is any "special" program. I have heard the same thing about language immersion schools as well.

Yes, the school was a Title I school until the AAP center was brought there, and they lost their status.

My daughter is in sixth grade at Mosby Woods and my son is in fourth. They both came from another school and are in the AAP center.

Moving them was one of the best choices my dh and I have made. They are happy in an environment that challenges them and doesn't let them slide by by being the token 'smart kid'. Thanks to the alliance for arts program, performers from the Kennedy Center are an integral part in their music curriculum. They are able to take robotics, acting, tv production after school and any number of other offerings thanks to the PTA.

Dr. Asti is a fine principal who truly listens to a parents' concerns and tries to involve the families in all aspects of the school.

I could go on, but I'd start to gush- The only other point that I will mention is that , altough we are in a different district, I am going to try to get my soon to be five year old as as a student of Mosby Woods.
