Ice Capades at Sidwell

Not particularly enlightening or sexy (although that didn't stop some hacks from trying to make a political issue out of it). But semi-amusing .... I'm actually surprised someone else hadn't posted it already.

Shouldn't this read "Ice Capades at Hearst"?

I thought this was another thread about Sidwell football.

Probably so. I guess it's sort of telling that all the media reports (and my post) pitch this as a story about Sidwell, when the real story should be about Hearst. I thought the original piece (the second one I linked) was really well done.

SAM2, first off let me just say that I am a big fan. I know its none of my business, but would you mind revealing what you do for a living? Do you work in education field?

PP...in "the" education field. Sorry.

It's actually not even fair to Hearst since the sidewalk in question is under jurisdiction of Parks and Recs not DCPS.

Thanks for the kind words. My apologies, but I'm really not interested in revealing any personal info; that's how I handle the login issue. I will say though that I do not work for any school, or in the education field at all. I'm just an interested parent trying to get informed.

I think the point of the article was good - but it was a bit unfair. We are responsible for clearing the sidewalk on our own property - and Sidwell happens to have a huge chunk of sidewalk to "call their own". And so they clear it. I am sure that in addition to the expectations from the parental community at Sidwell that legal exposure to an accident on their property is a huge incentive to do a "good job".

From what I could gather from the article - Hearst DID clear the sidewalk in front of the school property.

As the owner of a corner lot with more "sidewalk per house" than I would like to be responsible for...I think it is a bit much to expect Hearst to clear that entire side down to Quebec...it is really long and not even school property. If houses happened to be on that street instead of the park, it wouldn't be an issue.

That said - it would be nice if the DC govt would "appreciate" the fact that the park is next to a school and that the sidewals wouldn't be cleared unless the Parks folks get to it - and they should do a better job. In fact, they could do a better job at lots of other things too...

But really - if you think of all it takes for residents to clear the ice in front of their own homes and add in the fact that a lot of children in the city WALK to school - perhaps they should have just closed schools if there was a good chance that ice was still going to be there after a few hours with no attention.

"I just know I'm sick of hearing it. Maybe we should create an "All things Sidwell" thread, sort of like someone did for St Albans, so at least all the crap can be collected in one bowl."

SAHM2, this is your recent post on the Sidwell Obsession thread. How does this square up with starting a new Sidwell thread?

Good point. The last thing this board needs is another Sidwell thread. I just found the articles amusing, and thought others would as well, but maybe I should have kept them to myself in an effort to reduce the Sidwell mania around here. If there were an "All things Sidwell" thread, then I'd have plopped my links there. Thanks for calling me on it.

15:07 here - I didn't so much take this as a Sidwell thread as much as a DC public services (or lack of) thread....I am pretty sure that every other private school in the area was prompt and proficient at removing the ice from their properties....

If that was the point it would have made more sense to post it on the DCPS or Politics or Off-Topic Forums.

Update: Hearst rose to the competition and "kicked ice" following recent storm. Nice job by Wattenberg on reporting.
