Who, indeed?

In fact, governments of nations decide this! And the Spanish government does not give birthright citizenship to people just because they are born on Spanish soil. You have to have been born to Spanish citizen parents.

Citizenship does not mean identity.

I wonder.... do you also argue that men can't identify as women? I mean, they weren't born that way, right?! Who, indeed, gets to decide their own identity. It's not the government!

Actually, if that is accurate, it means she's also a racist. She doesn't want "brown" peasant Mestizo tier Latina status, she wants to steal "white" sophisticated European Spanish clout and profit off appealing to brown Latin-Americans (advertising, marketability).

How is it racist to not try to pretend you're a POC when you're not? She's not Rachel Dolezal

Things took a weird turn from her Latina cosplaying to hook Alec to her self-pitying I understand the struggle because people think I'm the nanny and I just want my kids to know the culture of me, their brown-skinned mother.

I don't think anyone has a personal vendetta. I think Hilaria is doing something very very wrong, but I also don't like the comments that are super mean and worse, not provable. The cultural appropriation and lies can be proven. This other tomfoolery about her being on here as well as some NYU stuff was ridiculous. Stick to the fact and the very clear evidence.

Yeah that’s the thing with all of the mean comments. There’s plenty crazy about this whole story without having to be mean about it.

So where are the Spaniards who are upset about her appropriating their culture? Sounds like a lot of busybodies in here pretending to be offended on their behalf because they don't like Hilaria.

That is an interesting question. Of course, this discussion is in English and most of the information about her real background is only available on English-language websites. So I doubt this is widely known in Spain. I also don't think that Hilaria is actually well known in Spain, perhaps with the exception of Mallorca. There isn't a lot of coverage of her in the Spanish media.

But re: "busybodies being offended on their behalf" - are you saying it is OK for anyone to claim a citizenship or nationality which they don't have? Could I start speaking in an Italian accent tomorrow and build an identity around being "from Italy" even though I didn't grow up there and have no family roots there? And then I could start building a brand around that? Maybe that will be my pandemic project. I'll come out of covid as an Italian!

To me it’s no different someone claiming to be Jesus. It only speaks to the individuals mental health. This is really a non story. She’s a kook. A rich underwear workout selfie making kook.

She spends time in Spain, likes the culture, her mother lives in Spain, she speaks the language, and may even have dual citizenship. Who decides when someone can claim an identity or nationality? You're not Spanish, so you're not the arbiter of this and don't have a horse in the race. Give it up, this is just a nothingburger.

Oh. I’m in agreement with you.

Does your mom live there too? If not then =/ not the same.

No, but she forgot to mention that she was born there while her mother was in medical school in America.

Then why not just SAY that? Instead of making up the fact that 40 of her Spanish relatives came down from Spain from their wedding, telling a reporter that Alec proposed on Long Island because it was the closest he could get to Spain, pretending to not know the English word for a common vegetable, using an inconsistent accent, etc. etc. etc.

I'm Asian and I know have a white friend who spends a lot of time in Japan and speaks Japanese. She does not claim to BE Japanese however. She just has a deep respect for the language, food and culture.

"The eeeelarrrrious must-see episode in which Eeeeelarrrria's white children cause her to be mistaken for the morena nanny. Ay, dios mio!!

With two blonde hair, blue eyed children, people at the park always ask me if I am a nanny. They hear me speaking to my children in Spanish and I have been offered so many jobs because everyone wants to teach their children a foreign language these days. I always laugh it off and tell them that if I were not so busy with my 2 almost 3 babies, I'd love to come work for them!"

I was not born and raised in this country so maybe I am missing something but she sounds like a liar to me. She claims she gets LOTS of offers to become a nanny. How does that even look like in real life? People just approach her and ask “hey, can you be my nanny?”. First people usually want to find out if you are actually a nanny or not, and than offer you a job. She claims she gets lots of nanny job offers out of the blue. The fact that she needs to point out her differences between her blonde kids and herself just proves she desperately wants to appear as a brown woman.

Am I paranoid or does it seem like Hilaria's PR people started commenting the last few pages to spin it seem like there's some question about her lies/identity? I mean I've read every last page of this thread during the pandemic and the evidence is established..no one is being "mean" or jealous of the "fertile" woman lol. Also the last set of pages seems to have accumulated more rapidly than previous times.

And for those saying why would she read DCUM, it's also been established that it's a top google result when you Google her name so obviously she'd be aware. Can someone ask Jeff if someone is sock-puppeting or if her team has ever reached out to him to take down posts?

I think I'm fascinated by this thread because it's so borderline. White people can be Hispanic but she's definitely toeing the line.

Are you implying that Rachel Dolzeal didn't have any victims?

I think its a slippery slope to question how people want to identify. It may not be accurate, she may be exaggerating or outright lying, but I wouldn't want to be the one to call her out on it. Nobody is up in the Elliot Page thread saying he wasn't born a man so he has no business claiming otherwise. So sometimes we just don't question it, but sometimes we do. The rules are constantly evolving. Better to just ignore than to try to dictate what the rules are of what you can and can not identify as. If someone wants to move to America and start calling themselves American, I'm not going to try to tell them otherwise.

Man you are trying so hard..... it's not the same. Hilaria isn't pretending to be a minority to take a minority job. Unless you think the job of marrying Alec was designated for a certain demographic. Spaniards are not a protected class. Try again! Who has HILARIA hurt?

You are likely paranoid. “Evidence”? Yeek. This is a gossip forum. Right yourself. Soon.
