| don't get me wrong: I do love DC. I love all that it has to offer. but now that I have a kid my perspective has changed a little and sometimes fantasize about moving to a more middle America town where it is not as expensive to buy a house or live. If you have done so, and left the DC area for a more cost friendly area, what are your thoughts? If you are also in my shoes what is holding you back from doing it? |
| The grass is always greener on the other side. If you move to somewhere like that, the pay will probably be lower and there will probably be less in the way of things to do and see nearby. |
| I've thought about this too. I know this sounds really terrible but the main reason I would never do it is the fear that we would be surrounded by a less-educated people that we would have nothing in common with. Again, I know how terrible that sounds, but that's how I feel. |
I'd take my chances since there are a lot of people with several degrees who are just.plain.stupid.

| No. I visited these places and know people who live there. It's everything I hate - no culture, no interesting restaurants or placed to go out, no amazing schools, few interesting people, awful grocery stores and shopping in general and no where you can walk around a la Georgetown or Ok'd T |
|
Whoops. That submitted before I was done.
Ok'd T should be Old Town. The only other thing I'll say is I don't think we pay more to live here, I think they pay you to live there. Yeah, that's a nightmare, not a fantasy! |

Having lived at different times in more expensive and less expensive areas, I find the DC area to be a happy medium of country and city, educated while still a little provincial.
Apart from the weather. |

I kind of understand; I know people buying townhomes up close to the PA line for the same amount the remodellers quoted to fix my kitchen...
I figure come retirement, I'll find someplace less costly than dc, maybe in NC... |
| yes |
| Not all places that have a lower cost of living have uneducated people. Take any college town. Take Philly. Take many areas of places like Vermont. |
| I think about it all of the time, but there are very few jobs in my field in lower cost of living areas- at least not doing the sub-specialty I like. I'm the one dooming us to live here, and I feel terrible about it- though we've learned to like it over time. |
| All. The. Time. |
|
OP, you have many options. Don't let the locals tell you any different. Don't feel trapped like so many. Get out while you can. Your kids deserve better. 19:38 - high five!

I loved DC and met some life-long friends here. But as soon as I had kids I couldn't stand some of the nonsense (entitlement, COL, preschool application process, traffic, etc etc)
We slowed life down and moved out. Could not be happier! |
