Ferret eats baby's fingers

Not sure if this was discussed already, but here's the story:
http://articles.cnn.com/2011-01-11/justice/missouri.ferret.fingers_1_baby-boy-pet-animal?_s=PM:CRIME I can't believe that the baby didn't cry until the 7th finger was being chewed off. The parents probably let the child to cry it out in the middle of the night. I don't care how much people trust their animals -- they should never be left alone with the baby. |

I don't think this is a CIO issue.
My guess is that the parents are addicts, mentally ill or otherwise impaired. Poor baby is lucky one of their ill treated dogs didn't eat it. Hope CPS takes him. |

| How will they ever explain this to their child? How can a child ever forgive their parents for something that could have been prevented? This is heart breaking. |

at least the dad killed the ferret afterwards. |

This is not a CIO issue. This is a "don't let your pets run wild unattended around the baby" issue.
If this is an issue of parental neglect, I hope CPS intervenes. |

Too bad somebody didn't pick up the Dad and throw him across the room instead of the ferret. It wasn't the ferret's fault that it did this, it was the idiot parents who had a young, wild animal running around a newborn. |

| I'll be that the boy and pet are substantially malnourished. Animals will eat anything when starving (just like people). |

I don't want to be the defender of this family. But animals can do a lot of harm to babies before someone awakens.
I used to see babies with 50-100 rat bites in Haiti. Mind you, these children were sleeping in one room shacks in a slum in Port-au-Prince, so there was no way the baby was screaming for a long time. What it means is that these animals can do a lot of damage fast. I think it's irresponsible to have an animal like that around small children. But I am not shocked to hear that the ferret did so much damage before the parents realized. |

| This is a great example of something that should never be posted. The image in my head is horrid, yet, there is nothing I could have done to save this child from the torture. |
