Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
| Thinking of moving to Bethesda or CC from DC for better public school options. Any advice on what neighborhood we should pick? |
|
you really can't go wrong with any of the schools in the area. Some say Whitman is best but in the past it has and it has not improved over the years ( I went there myself) and it is great but the other schools have improved so much that Whitmans polish is starting to fade.
but agian all great schools, if you want your kid to go to a good college, you can't go wrong at any level. |
| I agree. I'd pick a neighborhood you like and not worry about the specific schools. |
| Our kids aren't school-aged yet, but we chose CC over Bethesda because we liked the area/neighborhood better and feel the schools are comprable. I'm sure it can vary depending on where you live, but to us, CC feels more urban and closer in to downtown. Just a personal preference. |
| Bethesda and CC are both great neighborhoods with great schools. Can't say the same for most of the rest of MoCo these days. |
|
20:27 if you live in Bethesda and CC (both of which are towns, not neighborhoods), how can you possibly know what you're talking about in the "rest of MoCo"? If you refer to SES, by all means let the relatively well-off cluster where they may and leave the rest of MoCo to those who can and do thrive in diversity.
10:35 - are you suggesting your kid won't go to a good college if they go to high school elsewhere in MoCo? Please. |
Bethesda is not a town. |
| 22:04 is right - Bethesda is an unincorporated municipality. Made up of many, many neighborhoods. |
Really? We moved from out of state to Potomac (Churchill cluster) and have been very happy. Our elementary school is wonderful and very well-regarded (as are all of the elementary schools in Potomac). |
Beg to differ. Potomac Elementary is not well-regarded. Good luck trying to find data that shows it is. |
| Silver Spring and Wheaton are awful. We moved from SS to Bethesda because we wanted to put DCs in public. Takoma Park is highly diverse, and the school is not bad, plus the neighborhood is cheaper than B and CC and very community-oriented. I have a good friend with a kid in Wheaton public (not sure which), and her child is very bright and is thriving there. But it would not be my choice. |
| I know a lot of people who are happy with elementary schools in SS, although they haven't gotten to MS/HS yet. |
You do understand that Silver Spring is huge, right? It covers 5 or 6 zip codes, and includes many, many schools. To make a blanket statement that Silver Spring is awful shows a lack of knowledge and experience with some of the wonderful schools in Silver Spring. It also makes me wonder how you define a good school. Certainly the test scores at some Silver Spring schools may be lower than a tsome Bethesda schools, but I for one, judge the quality of a school on much more than test scores. |
Ha, you sound like someone in DC! |
Our son is in a Silver Spring middle school and we are happy. No problems here. I'm a lawyer and DH is a professor. We have a high income, a stable home and family life, and lots of enrichment opportunities. I'm not concerned at all about the education our kids are getting in Silver Spring schools - by virtue of the privilege they were born into, statistically speaking, they are already ahead of the game and will be fine. |
