One day I would love to be able to live off of my passive income.....for now it's just nice to put aside in savings. I'm making about $10,000 a year in passive income (the money rolls in without having to do any subsequent work) . I do this through a website on engagement rings I started 4 years ago--I earn about 700 a month from google ads displayed on my website. The other $100 a month comes from articles that I've written in the past for the website E-How.com
Anyway, I'm wondering who else earns a passive income (not including investment dividends), how do you earn it, and how much are you making? |
| Please do tell! I need to find out how to do this! |

getting in on the ground floor of an MLM scheme, then sitting back while all the dummies on "your team" work their assess off just so you can get a huge cut of their tiny pie.
Think Arbonne, Amway etc... It works if you get in early. forget about it otherwise. |
| OP, don't you have to do any upkeep on your engagement ring website? |
| Jeff, tell us if running DCUM is passive income for you by now... |
| I have a rental property... does that count? If so, I make about $200 a month. |
| Ditto on the ad revenue. That, and the amazon box. It's kind of amazing how many people will be reading my site, and then spontaneously decide they need to buy a new $2k camera from amazon, using my search box to do it. You're doing better than we are, though. We probably clear $5-6k a year. It goes straight to the college fund. |
Same here, although I tend to make a little more than that each month ($400 - 600). I actually fold that into my monthly income as I'm hardly working right now. I love the idea of putting it directly into an assigned savings account and may move to do that once DC is a little older and I am back to full-time. |
| Ummm,,,,Amazon Box? do tell! |
Look up near the top of the right column here on DCUM. See the amazon box? If I go to amazon through that link, by entering a search term, DCUM gets a percentage of anything I buy during that visit to the site. |
| Is a rental property really "passive" income, though? If you're doing the landlord thing right, it's a helluva lot of work. |

i wrote an article for an online medical journal and i get paid "royalties" of $174/year.
gotta love that... |
| Curious what kinds of sites people are running that get enough hits to generate income. Engagement rings, what else? Are these blogs? E-commerce? |
Mine's a blog-format one stop shop for all information related to my academic field-- conferences, calls for papers, interviews with notables, announcements about job openings and forthcoming books... There's also a pretty lively discussion area. |

i own two rental properties, single family homes, that for the MOST part have been fairly low maintenance. Maybe once a year I have to go down there (norfolk area) and interview tenants, clean the house, put in new carpet if needed, and move in somebody new. Right now I have multi-year leases on both houses.
although the last year I had storm damage on the house near the beach, and that has been an ongoing headache. the properties have not appreciated at all in five years, but at least the mortgages are gradually being paid down and the rent covers the mortgage. could be worse I suppose. |
