Recommendations for carpet stores

I'm looking for something for our basement and didn't love the selection (or attitude) at Georgetown Carpets. Does anyone have a recent good experience? I'm in NW but would travel to Rockville, Silver Spring, etc.

Ha! I was just about to say "No positive recs, but whatever you do, avoid Georgetown Carpet."

We had a good experience with Carpet Palace on Wisconsin Ave. in Bethesda.

I love "Wool and Knots" off Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda.

K&K flooring out of Chantilly will bring samples to you. We have been really happy with them for both hardwood and carpet plus they install very quickly.

OP here - thanks for the recs and keep them coming!

As a spin off question, I'm curious if anyone has tried carpeting for commercial use in their homes? I feel like that might be more durable for a basement playroom than what I'm seeing.

We just got new basement carpet and after checking out Home Depot and some recommended carpet store in Rockville, I booked an online appointment with Empire (you know, from the commercials) and we ended up going with them because of price, convenience and quality. I recommend giving them a shot. I was able to negotiate them down quite a bit on price too. The best part was, they came to me at 7 pm at night to show me samples and have me a final price (not just an estimate) on the spot and the saleswoman was very good. It was so simple and easy and reasonable that I would definitely do it again.

It's awful! I lived in a rental that had it in the basement and it was just terrible even with padding. I wouldn't get it personally. Better off getting just ceramic tile if you want something low maintenance.

I love working with steve rados at friends and family flooring. he doesn't have a showroom - will actually bring samples to you. http://friendsandfamilyflooring.com/

I found him reasonably priced, easy to work with, great installers...

He's done a bunch of different rooms in our house, most recently (2 years ago) DS's room, which is environmentally friendly/made of recycled plastic and impossible to stain, to get to your other question.

we just had berber installed in our basement by Carpet Express on Rockville Pike. It looks great and was cheap--$850ish for the fairly large basement and stairs. we have young kids so weren't looking to spend a ton.

OP here. I'm actually thinking of commercial because I think the designs are more fun and interesting than what I've seen so far in the carpet stores. If anyone has found someplace that has a good selection of interesting prints (and I don't mean loud and crazy, just something beyond basic berber and other similar wall-to-walls), and at not crazy prices, please let me know.

City Carpet on Georgia Avenue - 202-541-9600. Like Empire, they do housecalls, but will likely cost you much less.

Do carpet dealers that come to one's home tend to be less expensive than stores?

Karpet King in Rockville. Talk to Arliene. We have used them twice, and have recommended them many times.
Great prices and customer service. They are near the Korean Market.

I'm the pp that recommended friends & family flooring. In my experience, yes, because he's not renting a big showroom.
