Great Social Skills Group for Girls looking for additional member or two

Anonymous
My daughter is a member of a social skills group at Building Blocks for six going on seven year olds. We've been in the group for about nine months and I've seen the impact its having on her ability to socialize and interact with peers at schools. It is really giving her the tools to succeed. The therapist, Ashley Steehler, is fantastic. We currently have three girls but one recently moved out of the country and we'd love to have one or two additional.

If you are considering a social skills group, I can highly recommend this one, or if you have questions I'd be happy to answer them. The group currently meets for one hour on Tuesdays beginning at 4:45.

Can you provide more specifics? What are the current goals of the group? Does the therapist provide individual feedback to parents about their daughter? Are the girls all shy, do they have actual documented delays?

Where does it meet? How much does it cost per session?

The girls are not "just shy." They have actual documented delays or other issues. Yes, the therapist provides individual feedback to each parent -- verbal and written -- at the end of each session. The reason why I personally think the group is so fabulous is because the goals of the group are directed by the needs of the girls. I had previously attended a social skills group that was generic and formulaic and my daughter was bored out of her mind and so did not participate. This was works on general goals (maintaining conversation, playing with peers) but it a way that the girls agree upon. They choose games, they decide what to talk about, etc. Its been very effective this way. THe group meets at teh MacArthur Boulevard location of Building Blocks Therapy. I think its around $70 or $80 per session.

13:23 here - thanks for the extra information. one more questison - are the girls in K or 1st grade?

The two with delays are in 1st. There is also one without delays who is an advanced 5 y.o. (going on 7 or 8). She's just a really outgoing younger sister who insists on joining the group, and Ashley lets her b/c it's useful to have a "typical" girl in the mix.

Hey. Would a just turned 8 year old, second grader be too old for the group? My DD8 has been to social groups before but refuses to go anymore because she has always been the only girl in the group.

I doubt she'd be too old. Lots of first graders and second graders play together. Does she like girl-type play? There's no rough-housing, toy weapons, transformers or Star Wars. It's all tea parties and imagination games and crafts and board games. Come in and check it out and see whether she likes it and it would be a good fit.

Sounds like this girly group is having fun. Tea- how lovely. Should I try calling Building blocks and ask for Ashley? If you can prefer replying off-list, my email is ajg0273@yahoo.com. Thanks

Hi there, Wow. I hardly ever check this site, but I am the OP and the group is actually not going on right now but is hoping to get started again. One member moved and we really need one more to keep going so if you are interested in trying it out, please call Ashley or Kayla at Building Blocks. Or if you want me to tell you more about it, post your email and I'll contact you directly. Thanks

We would be interested in this group in the fall. My daughter would be 5 and she loves tea parties, princesses and creative play. She needs help with conversational skills but she is very articulate. Please let me know if we should contact someone at building blocks re the fall.

Yes, I would call building blocks and ask about the social skills group that Ashley is running for girls. Is just just about to turn five? The other girls are six and turning seven in the fall.
Anonymous
Yes, she would just have turned 5, but her vocabulary and articulation are above her age, so maybe they could meet her and see.
