| Any recs for good Japanese style curry? Not looking for the Korean version, which is close but somehow isn't quite the same. |
| Sorry, I only know the Indian and Thai curries. Somehow the Japanese curry sounds a bit odd. |
|
We just get the sauce blocks by S&B Golden Curry Mix. I think I have some recipes somewhere though. We usually put potato, onion, and carrot in ours.

| Why not try making it at home? Not trying to be a wise guy. I have been doing a lot of ethnic cooking lately. I get recipes on the internet or even better, from people themselves. It's fun to go searching for new ingredients and experimenting at home-so far I've made some Japanese and Indian rice dishes and they've come out OK and were surprisingly easy. A lot of things I've tried are foods I've previously enjoyed as take-out. |
This is why I love this forum! I'm going to try this tonight with leftover turkey. |
| OP here, thanks for the effort. It isn't odd, Japanese style curry is very popular in Japan. My mom is Japanese so I know all about how to make it at home too and it isn't really "ethnic" food to me; it's like making hamburgers. I'm looking for a restaurant that serves it. I appreciate the effort but I wish folks would try to answer the question asked... |
| o_o 01/09/2011 12:53 here. Well, I thought I was trying to "answer the question asked" since I didn't see anything about a restaurant in your posting. I thought when you said "recs" you meant ways to make it at home or something. I've never seen it served in a restaurant here. |
|
I make it at home too - when we eat out, I prefer something I cannot make myself, like raw fish sushi!
Do not know if Japanese restaurants serve it around here. |
|
I don't know of any restaurants in the area that serve authentic Japanese home cooking (maybe Chez Mamasan did? But it's gone now, anyway). Seems like any Japanese restaurant (even the izakaya) in DC get turned into sushi places (seriously, don't we have enough sushi places!?).
All the more "home cooking" Asian food I can think of in the area is Korean or Vietnamese, or Korean-owned Japanese (which would probably lead to the curry rice tasting more Korean-style). Sorry. |
Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. I know you actually were trying to be helpful by giving me a specific recommendation and I appreciate it. I admit I was a little touchy after the first response, and more as a result of another recent posting in which I got a lot of random comments and criticisms about my question, without anyone actually answering it. It is a DCUM issue. And S&B is good, but those bricks have lard, so I usually use the powder and a lighter oil. |

OP, try Temari Japanese Cafe on upper Rockville Pike. They have very good Japanese curry rice and other authentic Japanese dishes. If you go on the weekends, you might have to wait for a table because it is small. A bonus is that if you drive around to the back of the same shopping center, there is a Japanese grocery store! http://www.yelp.com/biz/temari-japanese-cafe-rockville

| Thank you 23:51, I can't wait! |
| A couple of years ago there was a little Japanese-Korean place at about 19th & K that had decent Japanese Curry. Not as good as I got in Japan, but decent enough that I made my way over there for lunch once a week when I worked in the area. I just tried to google to remind myself of the name, and there is a place shown at that location now called Rice Bar. Perhaps it is still the same people/menu? Worth a try! |
| My DH is half-japanese and we make curry rice in the winter all the time. We use beef or sometimes chicken or even shrimp and we add carrots, celery, potatoes and bay leaves. Generally, we used to buy the blocks that you find at the H Mart etc., but when I read the ingredients on the back, I almost fainted. The amount of sodium, lard and MSG is enormous. So, as much as we like this dish, we hardly ever make it anymore because we do not want DC to eat all of those unhealthful items. But it is a delicious dish. |
| OP did you go to Temari? How was it? |
