takeout options in arlington that won't break the bank

We're in the culinary wasteland of Crystal City, so I'm not going to be shocked if there is nothing really around here (besides Chipotle, Noodles and Co, Cosi, Chick Fil A).. any recommendations? I'd travel up to say a 10-15 minute drive.

How about some of the independent restaurants on 23rd St. Many of them are inexpensive and have take out.

Isn't there a Jaleo there? Do they do take out? What about Lebanese Taverna in Pentagon Row? There are a bunch of other restaurants there too.

El Pollo Rico near Va Square Metro.

Op here. Do you have any specific recs? We tried two different Italian restaurants in the area you speak of and they were both bad. One had potential but I found it to be both salty and overpriced (Cucina Vivace) and the other was HORRIBLE (Cafe Italia). It was so clearly frozen food that you'd buy at costco that had been reheated.. truly awful. Oh, and we also tried Cafe Pizzaiolo, which I found to be okay but nothing special.

Not exactly in Crystal City, but we are big fans of Monroe's in Alexandria.

What kind of food do you like, OP? Bombay Curry Company in Alexandria (10 minutes or less from CC) is good Indian food and they do takeout.

Al's Steak House (also on Mt. Vernon Ave.) if you want to indulge in some cheesesteaks.

How about that kabob place in CC? I've never eaten there but there always seem to be cars in the parking lot when I drive by.

Another one on Mt. Vernon Ave. is Po Siam. It's Thai, and I've only had the drunken noodles but they are AWESOME. Cheap, too.

You might do a Yelp search. Plug in your zip code, click on "restaurants" and then you can filter your search by distance, price, cuisine, etc. There is even a little map that you can pan around to see what is closeby.

Recommended on this board before, but still worth mentioning: El Charrito Caminante on Washington Blvd in Lyon Park (before you get to Clarendon). This is Salvadoran style tacos: homemade corn tortillas with different choices of meat and topped with green onion and radish, no cheese or sour cream on them. And great pupusas--the mixtas pupusa is the kids' favorite. If you're not sure what to order, try the burrito...it's a good introduction to the place for the non-Salvadoran (read: white people food). Oh, and SOOOO CHEAP!

What about that Afghan restaurant on Rt. 1? Bombay Curry Co. is great. I think Los Tios in Del Ray does takeout and is not too far from you as well. Lots more on Mt. Vernon Ave if you are willing to travel that far.

I used to live in Crystal City and had the same problems too. I haven't been to Tutto Italiano in a little while, but it used to be really good. Some others in that area might be, Champps, Lebanese Taverna, Asia Bistro, and Jaleo.

A little further away would be Guappos in Shirlington (IMO the best Mexican food), Faccia Luna, Cheesecake Factory and Mexicali Blues - all in Clarendon.

I find all of the Peruvian Chicken places to be good deals (whole chicken plus 2 sides for under $20). The one we go to most often is on Wilson Bld, right past where it intersects with George Mason Drive (west of the Ballston Metro). I think its Super Pollo, but I admit, I don't even look at the name anymore.

The Lebanese Taverna Market on Lee Highway is a much better deal on take out than the restaurant (at least for us). You can buy a lot of food by the pound (chicken shwarma, hummus, etc). They also have an olive bar and tiny little grocery setion (beer, pita). I supplement with my own rice (why pay for rice). To keep the price down, stay away from the finger-food (the per-piece items). They seem overpriced.

I've only had it once, but I found Z-pizza to be delicious (on Wash Blvd near Clarendon).
