Anything wrong with iron cribs?

Anonymous
I fell in love with the Venetian crib from Bratt Decor, and I can get a deal on it. It is cast iron, and I think it is made in China, though the brand seems very reputable. Any experience with iron cribs (good or bad)? Would love to hear people's experiences.

Cast iron sounds heavy -- you'll need a room big enough to have easy access to three sides of the mattress, or changing the crib sheet will be a bitch. I'd also worry about the inevitable head bonks when your child starts pulling up and learning to cruise/walk -- the crib was always a favorite practice area for my guys and wood slats are a bit more forgiving.

OP here. I will have 3 sides to change the sheet. Also, wouldn't bumpers help if the baby starts to hit his or her head? I wouldn't use them until then (I'm on to the whole bumper controversy).

Sure. An "iron" crib from China. What could go wrong? Chinese products are almost never recalled for containing lead or other toxins or being poorly constructed or anything...

i have a 2 year old and my concern would be when the kid is old enough to stand/pull up and then they could fall and hit their head on the railing or another area not covered by the bumper - the bumper is only useful for protecting the head of the kid who is rolling over or sitting up.

I'm not sure what the point is? You like the way it looks? It's just a really bad idea...you need to think past infancy and find a more forgiving material. I'm kind of baffled that cast iron cribs exist.

We have an iron crib from bratt and love it. No problems with bonked heads it's the same as wood..they will bonk it either way at some point. Of course it's not really iron or else it'd weigh a ton. It's perfect and we are so happy with ours.

I would be concerned about head bonks with iron. Bonking one's head on wood is not quite is painful as bonking on iron, in my opinion.

OP again. What about teething w/the iron crib? Any feedback?
And, damn, people are harsh on here!! What's wrong with wanting a crib because I think it's pretty??!!

It's okay if it's pretty as long as it's safe, too! And yes, the child will very likely chew on the crib at some point, hopefully someone with an iron crib can let you know how that works out.

I'm the pp with the bratt crib. Neither of my kids were teethers on the crib so I didn't really have to worry about that. THey might have put their mouths on it a couple of times but never for longer than a few seconds (we have a video monitor so I would know if it was happening when I wasn't in there). And people, it's not iron like a cast iron skillet. It's fake. It just looks pretty and is lovely and if you like it get it. There is no difference in bonking their head on the iron one or a wood one. We have both and neither produces a larger boo boo. Get it, you will love it!!!

If it's not iron, what is it made of? Any metal is going to be harder than wood. Just like a fall on a tile or concrete floor is worse than a fall on a wood floor.

Sounds like a bad idea. It's a temporary piece of furniture.

You mean besides that fact that it would truly look like a little prison...

OP, I just looked this up and I think the crib is beautiful. I'm sure all the naysayers have purchased plenty of baby items which are made in China. I guess anything made in China (or in many other places, for that matter) has the potential to have harmful ingredients. You can't control everything. Enjoy the gorgeous crib!

My friend who has a crib like this regrets it because she says her kids have come very close to knocking their teeth out on it many times
