Looking for Maternity Photographer in D.C.

I want to get some professionally done maternity photos for my wife (who is 34 weeks along), and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for good photographers in the district. I called one place that seemed good, but they were $370. Is that steep, or is this just one of (many) things I don't understand about the expense of being a parent.

I'm a photog, but I can't help you too much with a recommendation because I'm not in the area. The two photogs I normally recommend based on their portfolios are:

http://www.andreaburnsphotography.com/
http://www.littlemoonphotography.com/

but neither of them specializes in maternity, so hopefully someone else can come in here and give a more personalized recommendation.

The $370 price you were quoted- was that the session fee or did it include everything (prints, digital copies)? If so, that's a superb deal (and not very profitable for the photographer) if the photographer is actually a quality photographer. Since I'm not in the area, I can't say if the $370 price tag is common in DC, but it is not uncommon for high-end, quality, custom photographers to charge from $200-$400 just for the session fee. It's not really an expense of being a parent- there are cheaper photogs you can go to- it's about the photographer's level of experience, quality, and demand for the photographer's skills.

Maybe you'll luck out and find find a good photographer who just doesn't know what s/he's worth yet (and the true cost of doing business!) and is charging a lower price. Good luck!

We've used him for family photos and like his work. I know he does maternity as well, and I will probably use him myself when I get further along.

I used Kelly Smith - she was fantastic. She met me in the dead of summer, when it was like 110 (+) degrees outside, in downtown Alexandria and took the most amazing photos of my sweaty 35 week pregnant self. I'm so glad that I did it because the photos turned out amazing.

We liked her work so much that we had her do our newborn shots a few weeks later.

Check out the photos on her blog -I like those better than the website pics.

I also want to mention that she lives in DC, and she generally does her pics in DC, but I chose Alexandria since I live in VA.

My friend just had family photos taken by a photographer that specializes in Maternity and Newborn Photography. I am not sure of her pricing.

Here's the info:

Good Luck! I had maternity photos done with my first pregnancy. I wish I had the energy the second time around!

We worked with Jennifer Domenick and Mary Gardella of Lovelife Images for our wedding photos and loved them. They do portraits also and we've seen some great maternity photos and family photos in their portfolios. I'm not sure what their fees for a portrait session would be -- I think it would vary based on whether you travel to their studio or if they come to your home or elsewhere.

Because it was mentioned here, I felt like I should mention that I *do not* recommend littlemoonphotography.

She (Amber) is very expensive and when I arranged with her to get maternity photos (as part of an expensive package), she stood me up. Yes, stood me up. This is after we had emailed back and forth a number of times and my DH and I had taken off work, etc. Her excuse was that *I* didn't respond to her email to my work account the night before (she emailed me a reminder about the session at 7:30 pm on a Sunday night which also happened to be Mother's Day). She never really apologized and has a pretty big chip on her shoulder IMO.

In any case, she takes decent photos, but there are MANY other great photographers in this area. I would go with somebody else if I were you...

Hi, I'm the one who recommended Little Moon. Thanks for the information, as I said, I am not familiar with her, but she has a nice portfolio. Sorry your experience wasn't good!

She's an amazing photographer, very personable, and willing to come to your location (or one of your choosing). She also has a ton of awesome little albums, brag books, etc. Her prices seem VERY reasonable for the work she does.

My friend is a great photographer who specializes in infants and children. She also works and lives in the District. I really like her work because her photographic style comes across as very natural instead of some of the more staged shots others focus on.

I know that she is looking to build up her portfolio of maternity subjects and is currently offering FREE sessions (I think that her normal session rate is $200)

her website is:

Best of luck finding the right photographer and congratulations!

Hi, I hope it's ok to post since I am an photographer. You can check out my work on www.heatherleighphotography.com

If the $370 was for prints and the session that sounds about right for our area.

I just wanted to come to Amber's defense -- we have used her for various photographs (including maternity) since she first started out, and she has always been really professional and our pictures have been fantastic. I'm not negating your bad experience, I would have been equally as upset if that had happened to me, but felt the need to offer a good experience with her.

My girlfriend used Bonnie Velazco for her maternity shoot like a month ago or so and really liked her.
Her website is www.bonnievelazco.com
I do remember her telling me she is in the DC area.
