"misunderstanding."?? wtop.com BETHESDA, Md. - A freshman exchange student at Walt Whitman High School has been charged for taking what looked like a semi-automatic handgun to school. Montgomery County Police say the weapon turned out to be an Airsoft pistol and the whole event may be a "misunderstanding." "There's absolutely nothing to indicate that there's any kind of agenda, sinister agenda," says Montgomery County Police Cpl. Dan Friz. "It appears that this is just simply a misunderstanding on the part of the young man who was charged." The 14-year-old, a native of China, told police he considered the gun a "toy" and wasn't aware of the policies on weapons in American schools. "He at one point was extremely upset about it in front of the officer," Friz says. "You could almost feel the genuine confusion and remorse for just having this thing at school." Police did not immediately know how long the student has been enrolled at Walt Whitman, though he has nearly perfect grades. "A student came forward to the administration and told them that another student had brought a weapon to school," says Montgomery County Public Schools spokesman Dana Tofig. "What's important for us is to note that a student came forward and told us, and that is the most important thing here." The freshman has been charged as a juvenile with one count of possession with a dangerous weapon on school property. |
