Snack rut-- need inspiration

Anonymous
I need some new ideas for snacks for my 1 year old. Typically snacks are some kind of fruit (peaches, strawberry, watermelon) plus some kind of protein (hummus on pretzel, cracker with cheese etc). Haven't' started PB yet but am hoping to this month. Any other great ideas out there that are easy, minimally messy (we often do snack time as a picnic on the couch rather than in the highchair.

whole grain crackers and mild guac (messy though)
deli turkey roll ups
hard boiled eggs
cheese stick
half of a whole grain waffle (I like Vans' brand for a quick meal/snack)
yogurt and apple dippers
cream cheese on whole grain crackers or bread. I used to cut sandwiches up into 1/4s at that age.

I believe there are some whole grain bagels out there.

Oh my god snack police, everything in moderation. You probably think Goldfish are evil too, right?

I have a few of the Annie's crackers that I like - cheddar cheese bunnies, etc. A few of those and some cheese or fruit.

Cheese sticks are good too, how about apple slices with those?

You can also throw some cream cheese on one of those bad-for-you bagels.

string cheese
breadsticks
snapea crisps (these are puffed peapods--I get them in the snack aisle of the health food store)
edamame

I like the snack trap/snack catcher for taking snacks on the go--cut fruit can be messy, but grapes are good.

They are not evil, they are just empty calories. Toddler Chow, as it were.

Cream cheese isn't any better. Empty calories.

I agree that real cheese and an apple makes a good snack.

Enough with the 'empty calories'. You sound like you have your kid on a diet. Moderation, lady.

Not sure if you've tried other nuts yet, but we're also big fans of almond or cashew butter on crackers or bread or rice cakes. A whole grain mini bagel with some kind of nut butter is a good way to combine those evil bagels with some good nutrition.

Bagels are empty nutrition and evil huh? Now I've seen everything.

Cheese sticks or sliced cheese ("monster" or Muenster cheese is one of our favorites), different types of crackers (even goldfish - gasp!), veggies and fruits (avocado, banana, thinly sliced and peeled apples, peeled and chopped grapes, etc. Clementines are a favorite as well but 1 is a little young for that), yogurt (we do the flavored Chobani Greek Yogurts now that the kids are older), cottage cheese, etc. Animal crackers are always a favorite as well.

Now that the kids are older we'll also do nacho and trail mixes (dried fruit, cashews and peanuts, some dry cereal, and sometimes a few M&Ms or fruit snacks).

I'm surprised I haven't seen cheerios listed yet.

Also, my DS snacks on whole wheat toast, sometimes I melt a slice of cheese on top; monterey jack into sticks; yogurt melts; and we sometimes broil Spinach Littles from Dr. Praeger (in frozen food aisle.)

For snacks on the go we love the freeze dried fruit from Trader Joes - bananas & mangos are best. The strawberries and blueberries are yummy but messy and stain.

Oh, yes -- those freeze dried snacks are amazing, and they're nothing but fruit, so no protein, but nothing without value either. The fact that they have the water removed also makes them lighter to tote around. DD inhaled an entire bag of the strawberries on Saturday, though I'll confess that I had a few too, and they're delish.
