what does it mean when people say "my baby sleeps through the night"?

ok, as a first time mom, i have been told by friends that their DC slept through the night at 5 weeks or 6 weeks. My DD sleeps 4 hours through the night and I wouldn't consider this sleeping through the night. Besides, aren't you supposed to feed at least once a night anyways at this age? Just curious.

Unless you're worried about weight gain, you don't have to wake the baby for feedings. I would think sleeping through the night would mean at least 6-7 hours at a stretch during normal sleeping hours. My DS started doing this around 11 weeks.

We were told that we could stop waking up our baby for feeding as soon as she regained her birth weight. That happened at 2 weeks. At that time, she started sleeping from about midnight to six or seven, and every three nights after that we put her down 15 minutes earlier, until she was sleeping from 9 to 7. I considered her sleeping through the night as soon as she started doing the 12-6/7 schedule, so at two weeks.

My first DS was a terrible sleeper so I read all the sleep books. I think the concensus from the book writers was that if the baby was sleeping a 5-7 hour stretch, it was considered STTN even if that long stretch was from 7pm-midnight (which was my son's pattern) and up every 2 hours thereafter. However, when people say their baby STTN, I think they typically mean that their baby sleeps and does not wake them up (or maybe wakes up at 5am or so but goes back to sleep). I certainly did not describe my DB as STTN even though he sleep a long-ish stretch from 7pm - midnight or so.

Apparently some babies do sleep very long periods very early on. But, it's not the norm despite the fact that it might seem like it based on what others tell you!

Best wishes for this period. it truly does end and they do sleep!!!

My babies slept through the night when they didn't wake me during MY sleep! And no, it didn't happen at 5-6 weeks, or even 5-6 months.

PPs who had early STTN kids -- did you formula feed?

The only people I know who had 6wk-olds sleep through the night were friends who formula-fed. I think it takes longer to digest and the baby gets more calories. I'm a BF-only person, so it was more on the order of months before DC STTN, sadly!

I don't get how 7 pm to midnight could possibly be considered sleeping through the night, by any definition. It's a 5-hour stretch, yes, but it's just not accurate to call that "through the night.". (if that's what the "experts" call it, good for them, but calling it that doesn't change how much it sucks to be woken up at midnight.

My BFed baby STTN (9 pm to 6 am) around 11 weeks.

My 10 week old is pretty much STTN and is EBF. 10 pm until 8 this morning. My first two didn't sleep through until a year and I haven't done anything different. She just knows I'm old and tired.

My EBF DD slept from around 10:00 pm until 6:00am starting at 7 weeks. We were able to back that bedtime up to around 8:00pm by the time she was 14 weeks or so.

I think formula does take longer to digest but clearly its not the only factor. Something I think(?) I had going for me, I had a pretty crazy oversupply and dd could get a boatload of milk at a time.

I agree with the pp who defines it as when baby does not wake you during your sleep. My DS started sleeping 10 to 6 with one wake up around 3 am by the time he was two weeks old (EBF at the time). Bedtime kept moving earlier and earlier until we were at a 6:30 bedtime by three months. Nonetheless, the 3am wake-up stayed until 8 months. I never referred to him as sleeping through the night until 8 months, even though from 3 months on he was sleeping from 6:30 until 3:00, so an 8.5 hour stretch. Had it been an 8.5 hour stretch from 9:30 to 6:00, I would have called that STTN, but we were never in that situation. I have heard other people refer to any 6 or 8 hours stretch as STTN so you never know what someone means when they say it.

We BFed and coslept. As far as I remember, DD started sleeping for 6-8 hours around 8-10 weeks. But I must admit that some of the night feedings were a complete blur for me (I was barely awake), so I may be off on the timeframe...

This is a guess, but I would take it to mean the baby does not wake up during the night and sleeps straight through. Is this a serious question or an early April Fool question?

In fairness to OP, there are people who use odd definitions of STTN, hence, her confusion. I'm the PP who said my DS slept from 6:30 until 3:00 starting at 3 months and I had countless people tell me, "that IS sleeping through the night!" Um, no, it really isn't ....

OP is ranting because she won't be able to stick her kids in daycare tomorrow and go back to work.

we EBF and DC has been STTN since birth.

ped asked us to keep an eye on weight gain but DC was back to birth weight in a week.
