Alerting anyone with kids there:

SILVER SPRING, Md. - A Montgomery County special education teacher faces charges of heroin possession after police discovered she had drugs in her possession during a traffic stop Tuesday night.
Rebecca Amick, 25, of North Potomac was a passenger in a car stopped by Montgomery County Police. Police stopped the car for a speeding violation. The driver was going 40 mph in a 30-mph zone near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Thayer Avenue in Silver Spring.

Police say the driver and two passengers, who appeared nervous, agreed to a search of the vehicle and to personal searches during the 7:45 p.m. traffic stop.

Police say Amick, a teacher at Woodlin Elementary School in Silver Spring, had in her possession nine bags of heroin. Each of the bags contained one-tenth of a gram of heroin. The drugs had a street value of $90.

Amick, who was in the back seat of the vehicle, was charged with possession and released on personal recognizance.

Police say the search turned up two syringes and a spoon.

Another passenger, 25-year-old Faisal Abdullah of Potomac, was charged with heroin possession. Polcie say he had the drug paraphernalia and four bags partially full of heroin.

Police say Abdullah also was wanted for two counts of prescription fraud. He was charged and released on $15,000 bond.

The driver of the car was cited for speeding. He was not named by police.

The school system has placed Amick on administrative leave with pay. No further action will be taken until the school and police finish their investigations.

She was apparently a Kindergarten and 1st Grade teacher in the LFI (Learning For Independence) program, which teaches life skills to children with severe learning difficulties and disabilities.

I feel sick.

I'm going to be calling the School Board.

Substance abuse/addiction is rampant in my family (as is ADHD) and I'm painfully aware of its impact as well as the lengths people go to protect their secret. I've been touched and heartened by the kindness and dedication of the special educators I've met and I can't help but think Ms. Amick is cut of the same cloth, regardless of this very troubling news. Special educators aren't your typical teachers and I'm very sorry for everyone affected by this, especially Ms Amick and the kids she teaches.

Thank you comment person #2! Ms.Amick is definitely cut from the wonderful cloth. She is great with the kids. Let's try and remember innocent until proven guilty. Guess we will all have to wait and see!

I feel bad for her -- heroin addiction is no walk in the park. And even if she's guilty, I don't think it changes the good things she did for her students.

See, this is exactly why everyone should be required to take a 5th and 6th Amendment class as a teenager.

She should have NEVER "agreed" to a search of the car.

Officer: So, you were going a mere 10 mph over the speed limit. I'm going to have to search your car now.

You: No. Get a warrant.

So, perhaps she'll get off because she needn't have agreed to a search. Still, the lady had NINE bags of heroin in her possession. How many baggies of crack make you a dealer? If she worked at a video store this never would have hit the news. Still, I don't feel sorry for her just b/c she was a special ed teacher.

Uh, why WOULD you feel sorry for her because she's a special ed teacher?

Actually, the heroin was in the car, not on her person. By virtue of being in the same car as the drugs, she was charged with possession.

It is entirely possible that she has little to do with the drugs.

Its not like she was selling or giving it to the kids. Good people can have personal problems

I have no sympathy just bc she might be a great special ed teacher. Fine to sympathize w/her because she may or may not have a serious problem. But no one should give her a pass just because she happens to have an honorable profession.

If you found out that your young child's teacher has a heroin addiction, would you support her and feel fine w/her being responsible for your child?
