my fathers dragon (not the follow up books- just the original), homer price, wind in the willows, pippi longstocking, mrs piggle wiggle series (all read to my boys) I am looking forward to reading the little house books and the betsy-tacy books to my 3 yo daughter in a couple years- the boys did not care for them.

Laura Numeroff has some fun picture story book. My favorite is If You Give a Cat a Cupcake (because the cat looks like mine.) Amelia Bedelia is also fun...she gets herself into some real messes but teaches kids about word play and dual meanings to words.
