Post-partum tendon/joint issues?

Anonymous
I am about 4 months PP and have been having issues with my wrists and ankles. I am going to see a doctor next week but wanted to see if this might be yet another fun surprise that goes with having a baby.

I kept spraining my ankles for several months after having the baby. I think it takes a while for your joints to stiffen up again as they are still loose from the hormones. 1 year post partum and they are back to normal. I don't remember when that happened though.

I did. I had a weird little buildup that looked like a piece of bone under my skin at my wrists, and they were mildly painful. I got a referral for a specialist, but soon after, it went away.

My OB told me that I basically had arthritis because my body thought it was post-menopausal since I was still nursing and wasn't having any periods yet. Three months after my period started again the joint pain began to subside. One of my friends said that she had joint pain for well over a year PP.

I nursed for nine and a half months and had severe joint pain (wrists and elbows). I believe this was also due to holding DS so much. I was referred to a rheumatologist, took many blood tests (involving a lupus scare) and ended up with no answers. I was prescribed Voltaren gel to apply to the painful areas and I wore a wrist brace at night. It didn't stop until I stopped nursing. DS is 15 months now and I'm not having any issues.

I too had severe wrist issues pp. Was diagnosed with dequervain syndrome which required a shot of cortisone to the wrist. The doc then told me to rest the hand for a week. Needless to say, caring for an oversized infant did not exactly help and the pain is back. Fwiw, I too am bfing.

My pain was in my hips. It lasted for about 2 years PP. For a long LONG time I couldn't even sit with my legs crossed on the ground.

I bet it's de Quervain's tendonitis with your wrists. I had this. It went away after I went back to work and didn't have to hold my baby all the time. You can also try using a carrier/sling.

Yep, I have this too, in both wrists. It actually started in my last month of pregnancy and has gotten really bad in my dominant hand, especially from tightening the carseat. I'm 10 mos PP and I also have problems with one of my knees. The rheumatologist actually referred me to have some x-rays run on my knees and my sacroiliac joint, but I haven't had time yet.

In the meantime, I've found that stretching has helped some. I am a former dancer and plies and warm up stretches in the mornings do take some of the pain away, although climbing stairs with the baby is still hard for me.

I had ACL surgery a few years before DD was born, and for about 5 months pp my knee was aching like crazy. The pain did start to subside when I got my period back-- never made that connection before, but it does make sense.

OP here - yes! this is exactly my issue. The pain has just continued to get worse over the past few weeks even though I am back at work and not caring for DD full time. I am just glad to know that I am not crazy and that there is really something wrong with my wrist. Thank you so much to everyone for the responses.

OP. I have had wrist/ankle pain for the past 9 months (yep, DS is almost 9 months old). I had weird sensations in the arms too and was told it was carpal tunnel/swollen, etc. Not sure what is going on but you are not alone!

I had it bad for about 6 months post-partum. I thought it was permanent but it gradually disappeared.
