Capitol Medical Group - horrible experience with the office

Anonymous
I wanted to post regarding my recent experience with Capitol Medical Group on this list serve because in the past I have recommended the practice to several DCUM families.

To begin with, I have nothing bad to say about the doctors. Our experience with the doctors (almost all of them) has been mostly positive. However, we have always had problems of varying degrees with how the office is run. For several reaons, including the office administrative issues, we recently decided to transfer to another practice. Getting our children's records from CMG has been a complete nightmare and I'm still not sure if I have the complete records despite written requests, a multitude of phone calls and an in-person visit to the office. It isn't critical for our family because my kids do not have any life-treatening allergies, but during the entire process I was thinking about my sister and several friends who would really be in serious trouble if they needed to transfer their children's medical records and faced what I faced.

If anyone is interested in the details of what happened, feel free to contact me directly at mkbowsher@gmail.com.

I think their office is well run and don't have complaints. I needed a copy of both my children's records and was able to get them without a problem. I did have to pay for the copies and sign the release but that is pretty standard. I've also had some secondary insurance requirements and they've been very accomodating by running billing reports for me as well.

I'm not denying that the OP is having issues with them but I don't believe it's reflective of an overall poorly run office or anything worse for that matter.

I also have never had a problem with their office. In fact, their well-run administration is one of the biggest reasons I love them. They've never screwed up an appointment or a bill and are incredibly prompt with responding to anything I need.

I had several bad experiences with the office there -- including an incomplete copy of medical records being sent to CMG from our old pediatrician and the doctor at CMG saying, "medical records really don't matter unless your kids have an issue like asthma." Uh, my kids have asthma. Then a couple of bad experiences with the nurses which i have already posted on DCUM, culminating in poor care received by one of the doctors when we actually DID need medical care other than routine shots. We switched practices and I am so happy I found a good pediatrician who is the only doctor in his own practice. So, so, so much better. Find a practice where you can actually establish a real doctor-patient relationship instead of being one of masses of patients they need a large organization to manage.

Wow, you don't know what you are missing if that is how you judge a good pediatrician.

If you're going to criticize, please read first. It said ONE OF the reasons. Not THE reason. ONE OF. Someone's trying a bit too hard to be critical. Other people are allowed to have differing opinions. It's relevant that while OP had a bad experience (sorry to hear it), others have not. A universally bad practice is very different than one in which some people have experienced issues. It's not for any of us to assume how many, so why not let people express it?

I love most of the doctors at CMG, and we've had almost exclusively a terrific experience with them all around. We really love a few of the doctors and the nurses (Pat who handles some of the triage calls is just so wonderful.) They have taken great care of our kids.

HOWEVER, we did have one run-in with the office staff several years ago that was mind-bogglingly awful. It involved a conflict between CMG and our then-insurers that had nothing to do with us personally and affected all patients with that insurance. We had a sick newborn and an older child with some urgent health issues at the time, and the CMG personnel were just horrible - said really obnoxious things to me on the telephone and actively blocked our efforts to figure out a solution to the problem. We stuck with them mostly because of the quality of care, and because we rightly figured we'd have no further contact with the backroom administrators. But that experience makes it easy for me to believe that the OP isn't exaggerating.

CMG had conflicting records of my DS's immunizations. One chart said that he had a particular immunization. The other paper in the chart said that he did not. They had no way of knowing and said "This happens from time to time. You should get the immunization. Worst thing that will happen is that he got the same immunization twice." Umm. No thanks. We promptly left the practice and I have never looked back.

I did read first. Your post aid, it was "one of the BIGGEST reasons I love them" -- not "ONE OF the reasons".

We moved out of state and asked for the medical records to be transferred to our new pediatrician. Twice. Paid the fee, etc. It has been more than SIX MONTHS and we still don't have his records.

CMG was great, when we lived there. Now it is a nightmare.
