"Gifted" vs. "on level" classes in MCPS middle school

Anonymous
We just moved to MCPS and my son got placed in all "on-level" classes. I'm thinking of asking for him to move to gifted Social Studies for second semester. He's had an A on every test or assignment this year, and my understanding is that the on level and gifted kids are in the same classroom with the same teacher and different assignments, so it shouldn't be a big adjustment. My goal in doing this would be to have more information so that we can pick the right levels for 7th grade.

Does anyone have experience moving kids between levels, was it as easy as calling the guidance counselor, did you have to make a fight? Also, my understanding is that "gifted" in MCPS middle school is basically the same thing as "honors" in high school, not a true gifted program that you test into based on IQ or exceptional achievement.

He's at Westland.

I would start by speaking with your child's teacher. I would ask him/her whether your child is capable of handling the GT curriculum. You could ask him/her to give your child the GT version of the next assessment and/or test. Once you get the input from the teacher, if you still want to move your child to GT social studies, go ahead and call the counselor. Since the on-level and GT students are in the same classroom, it should be an easy switch. I know from experience that regardless of the teacher's input, you can appeal for your child to be placed into a GT course at Westland MS.
